No I think they are just parasitic and adopt any and all language of any tangentially related "oppressed" group. Gays, women, intersex, disabled, etc... Anything they can use to focus attention.

You are right that a comment like "you don't look trans" should be perceived as a compliment if you take their own stories at face value... But clearly there is some other motivation.. ie give me attention.

There was a NYT article a few months back that was just some transperson bitching that they couldn't go out in public to be "misgendered". (They didn't phrase it that way but it's difficult to describe their level of narcissism). Basically it made the argument that covid is bad for everyone BUT it was especially difficult for the poor transpeople because they had (not joking) no one to look at them when they dressed as the opposite sex

I remember that article. We probably discussed it here. It had a very "if a tree falls in the forest" existential-crisis vibe. But, that's what having certain personality disorders is like—feeling empty unless other people are around to fill you up with validation.
