When I imagine some sort of halcyon future, there would be occasional same-sex relationships in popular media for all ages, and nobody would care. My hackles get raised when everyone makes a big fuss over it. Maybe this is just growing pains, but I think it's likely something else. LGBTQ+ as a proxy for something else. The ongoing culture war isn't exactly about LGBTQ+. It's a lens, a locus, but it's not the thing-in-and-of-itself.

That's spot on, you're right. There's always been something bigger lurking in the background, like we're pawns in somebody else's game.
