The one common thread I see in the plight of young gay people is isolation.

They have nowhere to go and no one to talk to and everyone they know is breathing down their necks harassing them about their sexuality.

There is no substitute for in person interaction.

More generally, James tells me, kids are taught to start from the basic premise that their parents’ generation is outdated in its values and riddled with prejudice, a belief that gets more anachronistic with every passing year.

I know that the current obsession with generational divides isn't solely the fault of Buzzfeed and their Boomer v Millennial "articles" but it's still the first place my mind goes when I think about it. I guess Gen X is the enemy now? Even if the people pointing the fingers are screaming Boomer lol

Abuse victim? Yes. Role model? Absolutely not.

Some kid somewhere at some point accidentally found out that Gen X internet users seethe when accused of being Boomers, and the rest is history.

Yes, Gen Xers are old and the 90s are the bad old days that are also treated as exotic and longed for.

Meh. I remember the 90s. They weren't all that.

Sincerely, a GenXer. Who is not old dammit!!

Gen Xer's vs Centennials (Gen Z)? Hmm...

So is it Gen Xer's vs Centennials (Gen Z)? A lot of late boomers and early gen Xer's (late 50's-late 60's/early 70's) are considered Jonsers, and that's where all the hate for so called "boomers" come from. It's the hate for the 60's babies. That, or hatred for the Silent generation lol.

I think at this point it's gen z (I've seen them called zoomers?) vs everyone. They see themselves as the Most Progressive and the ones who will Change The World as if it's a novel concept that no generation did before.

IMHO the hyperfocus on the divide comes from a place of just not understanding why these cohorts exist. My pet theory is that the misunderstanding stemmed from my generation taking reports about consumer spending habits as a personal attack. (Another one is that their obsession with identity is the same thing boomers aka the Me Generation were dragged for as young adults haha)

Sorry this got so off topic 😅 but TL;DR set generational divides only matter in marketing and the social sciences and focus on the USA too much to be considered relevant elsewhere.

Separating people by generation as a form of identity politics seems like a cult tactic to me. It makes sense to have generational references if you're going to DJ for a party -- Gen X guests? Bring on the 80s music! But this is cult stuff -- separate the generations and make the TRA reject the "olds" -- that was the Chinese Cultural Revolution too, fight the "Four Olds."

Points were made :P

Exactly, it's so fucking creepy the way they obsess over the idea of the older generations dying off

I think they want them to die early, which is very insensitive, if you ask me.

I've only seen people on imageboards call them "zoomers", which isn't even a word honestly. At least centennial is a word lol.

Four years ago, Miranda’s 14-year-old son Seth came out to her as gay, via text message. It didn’t come as a surprise to either parent: they’d really been waiting for Seth to work it out himself. I ask Miranda when she first had a sense her son might be gay, and she answers that it was when he was about three. He got on better with girls; his playtime was more sedentary, more constructive, and less combative. Seth was always uncomfortable with the pushing and shoving that went on among the other boys. He just wanted to play house. As he aged, his friendship groups remained overwhelmingly female; and he had no interest in sports whatsoever. Everyone is different, of course. But many gay men reading this will hear bells ringing when they see such descriptions.

I assume this is a white family, and it's not "normal" (common) for effeminate/gnc boys to prefer female friends in the white community??

When I was a teen in the 90s, I had 3 friends who were flaming gay guys... very flamboyantly gnc. None of us were bullied at school for being gay as fuck. My friends were quite similar to Miss Lawrence (from Bravo's RHOA and Fox's Star series).

They loved being gay boys lol they were considered cool "fashionistas" who had the best styles. And this is in the Southeast where folks assume openly gay people are miserable. Lol smh one of my former friends is/was a ballet dancer... a black gay ballet dancer. He was quite popular lol
