I have sort of had this idea growing in the back of my mind for a while, watching the transgender movement sling mud at same-sex-attracted people, particularly lesbians and gay men-- calling us "genital fetishists" and "gross" and "bigots" for not being attracted to the opposite sex.
I have been heavily influenced by the shame of my homophobic religious upbringing, feeling shame about "who" and "what" I am, and "what being gay says about my character" as I often heard.
I have come to regard trans rights activists' smear campaign against homosexual people as ridiculous, because it is-- it is steeped in transgender ideology, the belief that "a man can be a woman in a man's body" and vice versa, and it is ungrounded in reality. There is nothing fundamentally "right" or "wrong" about same-sex-attraction, or fundamentally "shameful" or "praise-worthy" or "disgusting" or "open-minded" about it, it is just a naturally-occurring phenomenon.
It strikes me, that the religious homophobic character assassinations against gay people are just as full of bullshit as the transgender movement's.
I know that that may seem obvious, to those of you who dealt with the "religious right" and conservative homophobic types, and then the homophobia from liberals. But for me, it is something of the opposite, and a little ironic-- having to confront trans rights activists' regular and popularized homophobia has forced me to confront the shame I feel and felt from being force-fed these very same deeply-rooted homophobic beliefs, but from conservatives, not liberals.
I feel reluctant to acknowledge "who" and "what" I am, even with the obvious practical knowledge that's constantly in my face, which is that I am attracted to women and not men-- that is, I really don't even now feel comfortable with the idea that I am "one of those gays going to hell." But I kind of wonder if there are others like me in my age group, who grew up in the throes of this transgender craze, who will also have to come to terms with a homophobic upbringing this way. Especially those whose parents actually forced them to transition-- like that "Munchausen's by proxy" post I saw recently.
Just a rant. I know I post on here all the time with like, resources and links and stuff, but really deep down I wonder if I'll ever feel any differently than I do now about being exclusively same-sex-attracted. It feels strange to observe, especially when in some contexts, conservatives are more accepting of LGB people these days than liberals are...
