When I was a teen, I nicked my parent’s blockbuster card because they always went to a different video shop. I would make sure I got some cash whenever I deposited checks from my after school job. That was in case my parents saw my bank statements and noticed I was spending money at blockbuster. I had to tell my parents where I was going every time I used the car. So, I would bike all the way across town to rent dvds of The L Word to watch when I was home alone. That’s how important that stupid, melodramatic show was to me as closeted teenager.

I tried watching the reboot and had to bail after one episode. It wasn’t just the bad acting and silly plot lines—it was all the TQ garbage.

I can somewhat relate. I didn’t go out to get the DVDs but remember when my family went to sleep sneaking out to the living room where our computer was to watch the episodes. Seeing women being out and proud and loving each other shamelessly was refreshing and something I didn’t think was possible. It’s ridiculous that now we can’t have representation without the Queer/Trans nonsense.

I saw it on the internet. It was very, very hot, the end was shit, and the new series I didn't even bother.

The original was a hot mess but still somewhat entertaining. Out of curiousity, I checked out the reboot as the Alice character was my favourite and Bette porter still to this day is so hot.

The storyline is boring and the new actors acting on the reboot is really bad. The female trans actor pretending to be a gay man is the worst of them all. I’m not exaggerating when I say a wooden spoon has more acting ability and charisma than she does .

There is also a trans male actor who sleeps with one of the ‘lesbian’ character. It’s ridiculous that on a show about women loving women, we still have to endure constant homophobia and straight sex just because one of the character is trans.

Does the trans sleep with an old known character? Alice is the only real lesbian there( I mean the actor really homosexual).

It was all between the new characters. The old characters were luckily saved from it.

Better than nothing.

Carmen. Yeah, so hot. And the crazy girl who ended up dying in the end. Very cute as well. Loved them together.

I didn't watch The L Word until 2014, iirc, when I was in my early 30s... and I'm so happy I waited instead of watching it during my 20s. I'd experienced so much by the time I watched it. I'd been involved with 3 women who were friends with each other. I'd been unfaithful during a 6 year relationship. I'd been abused (by a bisexual femme who didn't seem abusive at all). I'd been an alcoholic. I'd lost a friend (she set herself on fire). So yeah, the series was more relatable to me as a 30+ year old.

I think I watched the first episode of the new version and couldn't get into it. Plus, thelword subreddit is pro-trans, so discussing the series there was impossible.

Your life is more dramatic than a movie. Cool

Jenny was crazier than a shithouse rat, but I had the hots for her majorly. I was pissed off af when the show killed her. I watched the reboot just to see if they resolved her murder storyline, and tolerated all the TQ affirmation bullshit, but they couldn't even tell me who killed Jenny! Fuck.

I just finished watching the original series yesterday and was considered watching the new one. Guess I won’t then if it’s all TQ bullshit

You shouldn't refer to the new abomination the same as the old one.

It's Generation Q (and a fitting name for the shitty mess it is).

The original series was amazing, it was a hot mess but it had decent characters, storyline and romances at times.

The new one is forgettable.

The L Word had Lisa, the lesbian man though. Was this satire? Can't tell with LA weirdos.

[–]Seahorse 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I believe it was satire, along with the madTV skit of a similar vein.

Not sure we've had something in history that was previously satire and is now reality 🤣

I googled. According to Guinevere Turner of "The L Word": Lisa the lesbian-identified man is based on a story I heard about a guy who was so lesbian-identified that he was mad he wasn’t allowed into the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival. That whole character came about because I was trying to explain to some of the staff what the Festival was, and in the process I mentioned this guy Lisa. And the executive producer was like “A dude named Lisa? I love it! Let’s make him a character.” That’s sort of the way characters evolve.
