I don't even think this type of stuff is out of malice. OP was trying to be inclusive. But doing it without critical thinking can easily become offensive. It's like if a hurricane completely destroyed one city but then instead of talking about this city you keep saying "we need to support USA as a whole", completely avoiding to talk about the specific group of people that was affected.
