Both Mass Effect and Dragon Age were generally LGB friendly(I think). There were 1-2 people your player character could romance of the same sex(or who were other races equivalent of the same sex if an alien). They did get a bit more woke in the later games especially DA:Inquisition added a T(not as a romance just one character you encounter) and the L/G romanceable options got more stereotypical.

Favorite Game: Horizon Zero Dawn. On the LGB front the player doesn't romance anyone but there are a couple NPCs you encounter who do mention their same sex partner, but that's as far as it goes.

Edit: Hah, no one called me out on suggesting you could romance people of the opposite sex... Fixed.

Ah, I've played a tad bit of Dragon Age Inquisition and it looked rather "edgey". Also heard of the T character---Maybe I should check out the other games in the series/by the company.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a good game! I like the concept of having primal match up with sci-fi. I haven't played it in a while though. Sadly didn't grind enough and got stuck...in one of the beginning levels. Didn't make enough potions to heal...

Honestly, you won't even know the character is trans unless you dive deep into her story via conversations.
And, to be a lore nerd, it actually makes sense given her relationship with the Qunari, who view people via their soul and not their physical forms.

Dragon age Inquisition is great, you can go through the whole game and really feel like a gay hero, if that makes sense. Not sure about lesbian content but there was alot of gay content. The trans character is minor and you don't even need to interact if you don't want to. Fallout and assassin creed odyssey also have same sex content. Mostly its being able to romance same sex characters.

Dragon Age Inquisition was the first game in the series that introduced gay and lesbian characters (as opposed to the bisexual options before). I agree, it's pretty amazing.

Although I fear OP is right and Dragon Age 4 will put more pressure on TQ. I believe Bioware will want to appear as woke as possible.

If you're interested in a really chill, cozy farm life game similar to the Harvest Moon series, I strongly recommend Stardew Valley! There are ten romanceable characters (5 female, 5 male), and though it's kind of "everyone is bi," I prefer to consider it "everyone is farmer-sexual." :P

Harvest Moon is a classic! I loved that series growing up. Heard that the company branches into two now. The original developers who made Harvest Moon,Marvelous AQL, now call the game series Story of Seasons. Natsume, which was Marvelous' language localization company, stole took the name Harvest Moon once they broke up.

I like Rune Factory a bit more than Harvest moon now---It's a fantasy/medieval spin-off of the game. On RF4 you can change your game sprites to the opposite sex later on (I think you have to beat the game though..)to make it seem like a same-sex relationship, but idk if they still refer to your male character now changed to female sprite as a "he".

I've played a bit of Stardew Valley too, it's been awhile. I'll have to check it out again. What bogged me a down a bit was the graphic designs(even with mods) and I guess I don't have that 'one-cool-trick-that-doctors-hate' in Stardew Valley(yet). I know the ins and outs of HM and RF games to where I can get what I need easily. SV is a whole new and different beast(not a bad thing).

I typically romance female characters in games even on bisexual/straight romance games...maybe only once did I romance male character but still preferred women characters, they tend to have more interesting character designs.

Edit: word

Oh interesting, I didn't realize the companies had split up! I did notice the games Natsume puts out have been a downgrade in quality, so now I know why.

I mod a lot of the graphical appearances in Stardew Valley as well. The game was made by one guy, which is incredible, so I give him a slight pass on not being a top tier pixel artist. :P There's definitely some jank to the character sprites and animations, though.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed with what Natsume came up with, but Marvelous has been doing a good job! They use XSeeds for their language localization now.

True, ConcernedApe spent 4 years creating Stardew Valley all in C#! It's cool that he blew up so big after and was able to get the game on different platforms and is continually adding features to the game.

I'll have to give Stardew Valley another go. I liked it at first, but just been in a gaming rut where things I used to enjoy are losing its flavour for me and I overanalyze small faults in the game.

If it helps, there was just a huge update to Stardew a few weeks ago that added a bunch of stuff, including a whole new area called Ginger Island.

I guess World's Dawn(which was released at around same time) is a lot like this as well and probably also inspired by HM. 4 females and 4 males are possible marriage candidates. And since the main character can be either sex, everyone's basically bi. I read that it has less focus than Stardew has on farming and more on the relationships the protagonist has built over the seasons with the residents of the village. I only started playing it recently and haven't finished it myself yet, so I don't know how in-depth these pairings can get since I haven't pursued anybody yet(figures...). I've been too busy being a farmer workaholic from dawn to dusk making coin. I read in some reviews that the better looking and more interesting characters are off the table, which is a shame.

I also recommend dragon age and mass effect! There is also Tracer and Soldier 76 in Overwatch, although the story-mode isn't out yet so we have yet to know whether they'll lean towards TQ+ or not (I want to trust in Blizzard, I really like their storytelling)

Life is Strange (especially Before the Storm) games have possible gay routes too. Then you have the controversial "everyone is bi" games like Fallout 4. Errr what else...? I haven't played many recent games. Oh, Fire Emblem Three Houses had some nice gay romances, but again, no homosexual characters and bisexuality is never addressed.

My favourite games have to be dragon age 2 and warcraft 3 for PC. I loved the storytelling and the characters in both of those games. The twists, drama and tension is very good, exactly my cup of tea haha. Starcraft 2 also falls into that category, but I found the story less dramatic. Sarah Kerrigan makes up for it. Easily one of my favourite female characters of all time.

For Nintendo consoles, I'll go with Fire Emblem Awakening and The World Ends With You. One is really entertaining and addictive, the other is increeedibly creative and fun, and has very nice messages about life and adolescence.

I don’t really play video games but there’s this really cute RPG adventure game called Heartbeat that’s developed by two gender critical lesbians (I think? And some others). They got a lot of hate for being gc, but the game is really good. All the characters except for maybe two or three are homosexual, and many are tomboyish/gnc.

[–]PeakingPeachEaterfemale♀ | detrans🦎 | eater of peaches 🍑[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That game looks really cute and it has good reviews too.

It's kind of like gay alternate universe 3rd gen pokemon. If you think that sounds good then you'll probably like it. Pretty cheap for all the game you get!

PS: apparently dev is a transphobe so probably steal it if you're interested lol. It doesn't come up in the game's text (at least I didn't notice it) and the dev's cursed views just makes it funnier that I read half of the characters as trans!

D E A T H O F T H E A U T H O R

Except for that review(though they did give it 7/10)...They still want to play the game by a "transphobe", just not pay. 😂 A bit disappointed that they read the GNC tomboy characters as "trans"...

[–]nevergonnagiveyouup 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

everytime someone thinks tomboy/tomgirl behavior is sign of trans just makes my hope in humanity dwindle.

Haha, yeah, kind of reminds me of when TRAs steal textposts by radfems and claim it as their “own” but don’t give them the full recognition. Just admit you like the terfy content they make! >:P

Life is Strange: Before the Storm had a lesbian romance involving the main character. Unfortunately I didn’t find the game very entertaining at all.

Tales From the Borderlands has a lesbian relationship between non-playable characters (Athena and Janey). You can choose to have them take a larger part in the story though. I find that game very entertaining and funny. It’s a one person game, but you could even switch players when the game switches protagonists, which is what my sister and her boyfriend did.

Undertale of course has Alphys and Undyne, but I know that game isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. You only see their romance if you get a particular good ending.

In Tacoma, you uncover a story that involves crew members of a spaceship, two of which are in a lesbian relationship.

Other games that include LGB characters or relationships in a very minor way include Gone Home and Observer.

I generally try to avoid any game with LGBT+ content, whether that be LGB or T+. It's almost always forced, it's almost always terrible and preachy, and the whole point of games (and other entertainment) is to have fun & be distracted from the depressing reality. I don't want to be reminded of that in my games.

Would recommend Life is Strange! It's not perfect on the TQ front but is pretty good-- no trans characters, but it does kinda gives off the message at points, implicitly, that "everyone is bisexual," which is more than a little weird and I remember wondering about even back when I was more of a TRA and still in denial of my own same-sex attraction. But, for me it was a huge thing to play that game because it normalized being same-sex-attracted, and I'd never even thought about it as being a "normal" thing before. I also love the layout of the game, where you get to make choices about the plot and stuff. I need to play more games like that.

I keep hearing recommendations about Mass Effect and Dragon Age so those might be good to try, I see a few people here mentioning them as well.

First and foremost: Gone Home. Seriously, this is not only one of the best story-based games, not only has an awesome fucking soundtrack, but has a sickeningly-sweet but still realistic gay romance. I'm actually shocked more people haven't suggested it thus-far, it's easily top pick for an LGB game in my book.

The Life is Strange games, both the first one and the prequel Before the Storm, are not only awesome story-based games ( what some call 'walking simulators' ) but handle same-sex romances in the best possible way: they're just there. They don't lecture you, they don't rub your face in it, you just have characters who are gay. Before the Storm, in particular, is almost a game centered around a budding lesbian romance only with, y'know, tons of angst and drama thrown into the mix. I'll admit I am biased, though, as these are basically my absolute favorite games ever.

Another, The Outer Worlds, is an open-world RPG that has a very awesome lesbian character as well, voiced by Ashley Burch, and even if she's not romanceable her story arc is both adorable and hilarious. It also helps that it's a very good game.

Lastly, Dragon Age: Inquisition is the first game where I created a character specifically to romance one of the companions. I usually make male characters when given the option to customize, but the moment I learned Sera was female-only romance I immediately started all over, her character was just THAT good.

Kind of sad that there isn't a standard game that is gay-themed, not just include some gay characters. By standard I don't mean visual novels or dating sims, I'd like an adventure game or RPG with a homosexual main character and romance.

Enderal,a Skyrim total conversion mod by German team SUREAI. There are two romancable bisexual characters,a woman and a man. And you really have to work hard to gain their affections.

All bachelor/ettes are romancable by either sex in Stardew Valley if you want to play a chill farming simulator. Its available on a multitude of platforms.

I'm going to second everyone here and recommend Mass Effect as well. My first and favorite "oh, a gay person" moment in video games was in Mass Effect 3(?) When you entered the engine room and there's a convo between two male NPC's. They're talking about their families and one of the guys says that he misses his husband.

A+ inclusion imo. Simple, non-intrusive, and makes no difference to the game play. Nothing would change if he had said he misses his wife instead.

If you don't mind all the companions being bisexual (or playersexual), Divinity Original Sin 2 is an excellent rpg that allows you to romance man, woman, lizard, skeleton...

Mae from Night in the woods is bisexual.

I remember some important characters in Guild Wars 2 being a lesbian couple.

The Malkavian CEO in Vampire Bloodlines is lesbian I think. Been a long time for this one.

Really not much, huh?

I'm a big fan of XCOM 2--especially with DLC or the Long War 2 mod. There aren't any canonical LGB characters, but you could modify your entire roster of soldiers' biographies to make them gay if you wanted to, I suppose.

I've also been playing quite a bit of Legends of Runeterra over the last few weeks. (For anyone who doesn't know, it's a digital collectible card game that uses the same setting as League of Legends.) It's a pretty fun game, but regarding your question: none of the confirmed LGB characters have been ported from LoL to LoR yet.

From games that wasn't mentioned yet, Telltale's The Walking Dead allows main protagonist to enter lesbian relationship in their final season.
