“Biden picks Dr. Rachel Levine, a straight white man, as assistant health secretary as per usual. LGB people told this means equality and recognition for them.”

"Fuck off" is what I have to say to the original post. so pretty much a straight white man, only this time a straight white man in makeup and long hair. I mean yeah it's something a little different but not really...

Oof... this man does not represent L/G/B people. Maybe he will be more focused on the pandemic and vaccinations, for the time being?

I am especially concerned that he was named as a health secretary, as opposed to, say, transportation or some other department. The article says that one of his areas of focus is "LGBTQ+ medicine" and it is clear that he has a personal interest and bias on those topics (and possibly a financial one as well, who knows; many doctors are well-compensated by drug companies for giving their patients certain brands of drugs).

I saw that. I don't want to believe the worst, but... paraphilias come in clusters, and there is a solid chance he has autogynephilia as a MtF living in the U.S. at this point in time and passing as little as he does (and AGPs tend to have more trouble passing than HSTS). So pedophilia is not out of the question. I really hope that's not the case, though; I need to read up more on paraphilia overlap.

To be clear, while pedophilia crossed my mind, it wasn’t the main impetus behind my comment. Rather it’s that he will be treated as an expert on “trans kids” and give credence to that myth.

Is it just me or does transitioning when your kids are still small or teens makes it extra gross. Like you waited so long, wait until they are adults to deal with dad growing boobs and wearing nylons. Being a teen in todays world is hard enough no need to make it more difficult.

So, until proven otherwise (and that's unlikely considering every pediatrician with "LGBTQ+" in mind tends to be a child abuser), Biden just elected someone who advocates for child abuse? Great!

I hope that America "wakes up" and sees that this isn't the answer either, not even to Trump. Too many people think that Biden is going to save the USA, I know that's so far from the truth.

[–]mvmlego 16 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 0 fun17 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

Yep. Just like with abortion, it's not enough for the new Democratic Party for the procedure to be legal; the procedure is so unquestionably good and unquestionably important to justify using the gun of the government to make everyone else pay for it.

[–]Archie 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun -  (9 children)

Don't tell me we have anti-abortion people on a second wave feminism sub

Abortion isn't accessible for every woman if they have to pay for it. And usually, for those who need it the most.

[–]fuckupaddamsBisexual Terve 12 insightful - 2 fun12 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

This subreddit isn't for feminism (gendercritical would be more apt) and you unfortunately do get conservative men here who can't and refuse to understand the nuances of being a person capable of pregnancy.

[–]mvmlego 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I disagree with your comment in a few ways.

  1. My comment wasn't anti-abortion. I was pointing out that federally subsidizing trans surgeries and hormones can be justified by the same reasoning that the Democratic Party uses to advocate for subsidizing abortion. I didn't imply anything about whether those procedures should be legal.

  2. This isn't a second-wave feminism sub. Feminism is specifically devoted to advancing women's rights. This sub also advocates for the rights of gay men--a group which is as removed from the proper scope of feminism as it's possible to be.

  3. It's wrong to force people to pay for something that they believe to be murder. It's also bad for society. If we want to live in a pluralistic society, then we need to let others live according to their own conscience. Do you believe that coercing people into using certain pronoun conventions is wrong in principle, or only wrong for conventions that you disagree with?

Just piggybacking off of this-- someone made a great point to me a few weeks ago, that it might help straight people get on board with LGB Alliance if they a) see that many of us LGB people are and b) hear us say, "Hey, it's not bigoted for you to take a stand against transgender ideology; in fact, it would be homophobic of you to support it!" I think some straight people don't feel allowed to disagree with the belief in "gender identity" that is pushed by trans activists.

And if we don't keep going then those who realize they were just hurting themselves won't know where to look for support.

[–]reluctant_commenter 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

If you're looking for actionable items, there have been a few past threads on this but my suggestions are:

  • Provide support for people harmed by gender identity ideology. That means LGB people, especially teens, detransitioners, teenagers in general who may be pressured about transitioning by peers, and other marginalized groups being harmed by gender identity ideology (e.g. people with autism, women, etc.).

  • Boycott or refuse to buy products from companies that actively promote gender identity ideology. Certain feminine hygiene product companies, for example, if you're a woman. I was thinking it might be helpful for this sub if we got a list going of such companies.

  • Organize resources that we can share with people on the fence about gender identity ideology. Such as newspapers, research, etc. Some people posted today about the investigation into the Tavistock in the UK, for example; that's great because a) it brings us hope that the tide is turning and b) gives us an official resource that we can share with people who might be skeptical-but-not-yet-persuaded about gender identity ideology.

Just some ideas.

It was ban of everyone under medication, not exclusively transgenders. It was framed as "anti-transgender" by woke media. It is like saying that "no human is allowed to enter this place" is racist, becasue it is not allowing people of color in there, when in reality it is not allowing everyone.

[–]dippintots 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I don't think this is accurate. I think it was a ban exclusively for transgendered people. Do you have a source?

[–]ZveroboyAlinaclownfish is a clown or a fish? || Febfem 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ban was aimed at them, according to Trump tweets, with reasoning that "we need healthy army without distraction", however, the changes were against everyone on medication (they were before Obama like that - everyone on medication can't serve, but Obama made changes, that transgender people were excluded from that rule, and Trum returned them back). So transgender people who were not on hormones and who were not wearing wigs and make-up on servise still were able to serve in military.

This sort of choice between two awful candidates that's plagued American politics won't get better until people see that the (very) long-term benefits of breaking the political duopoly outweigh the costs of losing an election or two, and vote third-party candidates into office to reform the voting system from FPTP to something more representative.

I think there's a potential solution to this problem, but the culture wars are eroding it: find someone IRL who you know and trust who despises the Democratic and Republican candidates as much as you do. Then, figure out whether they plan to vote for the opposite candidate that you do (in your case, they planned to vote for Trump) just to keep the other person (Biden) out of office. Then, make an agreement to both vote for a third-party candidate.

[–]wafflegaffWoman. SuperBi. 7 insightful - 4 fun7 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 4 fun -  (2 children)

outweigh the benefits of losing an election or two

Not when the fate of the entire world is at stake.

This needs to start at the local level and work its way up over time so there's actually a voter base that can win at a national level. Otherwise I agree, but dead people can't vote. We have to be alive to change this.

[–]mvmlego 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Not when the fate of the entire world is at stake.

I was no fan of Trump, but I don't see what you're getting at here. Regardless, my proposal still stands. The spoiler effect can be avoided by pairs of people with opposing political persuasions agreeing to vote for third parties. In other words, my proposal is a way to avoid losing elections to a potentially world-ending main-party candidate, while still accomplishing voting reform.

It’s like.... how am I supposed to be ok? I look at the news for 0.5 seconds a week and it just doesn’t stop. The world doesn’t stop going backwards. I almost wish I could unsee and unknow the things I’ve learned about TRAs/the trans movement

Given that there are at least some trans people who don't buy into TRA ideology and will actually side with people like Jordan Peterson on trans issues,* I held out some hope that Biden wasn't appointing a radical to the position. Then, I followed CBS's link to another article about so-called harassment against Levine. Given how sensitive Levine seems to be about what constitutes harassment (e.g. a parody in which a man played Levine), I'm not optimistic.

Lol well I hope the dems enjoy their four years while it lasts.

God, how tone deaf can you be. You have an extremely divided public and you pick an extremely polarising person in your staff. Yep, I'm sure that'll go down reaaaaal well.

Yep. I think there's a mistake on both sides to mistake an electoral victory as an ideological victory. Most presidents (at least in my lifetime) weren't chosen because Americans loved them, their ideas, or their party's ideas; they're chosen because Americans hated the other candidate more.

This is a good point. Now of all times is not the time to throw such a curveball of a person into such a position of authority. The country's on fire and you present the clown with a flower squirt gun.

I really hope the ideology burns during those four years. We all know how much influence America has worldwide. It's like seeing the future and watching a catastrophe in slow motion. You know what'll most likely happen and you know you can't escape.
