It irritates me that somehow being a particular race / gender / sexuality gives someone a free pass into stuff like this. Sure apply on hardship grounds and back it up with actual evidence, but just being black or trans doesn't automatically mean you've suffered some kind of hardship.

I have a learning disability that affected my grades at uni, and I can back that up with evidence. However I am definitely not telling any employer what was going on because they may think they have to make actual accommodations. Diversity in institutions is really only for show. Someone being gay / black / trans won't affect their job and the employer doesn't have to do anything, but having a disability, mental illness, or lack of resources means the employer (or thesis supervisor) has to pull their thumb out and do something so they just stick with race and lgbt diversity.

I completely agree, this professor should have let people apply under non-specified hardship grounds (with evidence), and not specific identity categories. Otherwise there's no way this wouldn't get abused by opportunists. But there are so many students who work so hard and are dedicated, but carry the equivalent of a piano on their back, so they can't get 90% or qualify for an independent study. Trans is not that piano. This prof's heart is in the right place, but she's going about it all wrong.

sexuality

gay

lgbt diversity

No sexuality, gay or lgb, just T.

If they were going by hardships, these wouldn't be the categories. The only kind of "diversity" I can get behind is for the sake of new perspectives. I won't protest diversity for the sake of addressing cycles of poverty either, even if I think it's dumb and ineffective. But trans is not a new perspective or a cycle of poverty, it's narcissism.
