I can kind of understand it in a US context because of inherent heteronormativity/religious quackery in US law, but outside of the US it makes no sense.

As marriage is a cultural institution used to control and dominate women, why would I as a gay man (who is outside of the US) be interested in it?

I actually find the concept of marriage quite interesting, since it has become so entrenched in western societies to the point that many people do not realise that it is not a cultural institution that exists in all societies.

Also the idea of historical gay marriage is just idealistic revisionist history using John Boswell's mistranslation of temporary pederastic civil unions (this plus this).

Depends on country, but in our country marriage is giving some benefits in different fields of life, plus it is protected by law, especially if you will break up lately and need to decide who will take what from "collective money". Here marriage is not tied with church in any way as well, and laws are not connected with church either.
