The fuck are "LGBT rights" though? I hate it when people say this and aren't specific. I can't think of a single human right that "LGBT people" lack in Western society. At all. It's even more dubious that it supposedly affects all of the letters - sometimes people use "WE'RE LOSING LGBT RIGHTS" to mean "You can't change your legal sex easily anymore." As if that somehow affects me as a homosexual...?

One thing that comes to my mind is that most developed countries haven't banned conversion therapy.

Also LGB people in USA got the right just this year to not be fired for their sexuality (though I'd say this one is more of an issue with USA employment laws overall, not just with LGB people).

According to the article, the commission argues against same-sex marriage.

Why should conversion therapy be banned if people want to be straight? I’m pretty militantly gay but I also believe in human freedom. If I decide I want to be straight for any reason and I pay people to facilitate that, then why should it be banned? When did things change from leaving people alone and expanding human rights to demanding others think as commanded?

I find it rich that you are not permitted to attempt a conversion to heterosexuality but they will encourage you to cut your dick off. I’d rather have a wife, thanks.

Holy hell this post.

Cutting your dick off is how conversion therapy works in Iran. Now suddenly gay men are straight women.

If you wanna have a wife, by all means go and find one. Wanna have straight sex? I'm sure there are many women out there.

Don't consider that a right, really, especially if the conversion therapy is NOT forced or barbaric. Some of us would kill to have a legal, CONSENSUAL option like that. I know I would.

I also don't consider marriage a human right, by very definition. It's pretty trivial.

I don't know how it is in your country, but in mine it isn't legal to sell pseudo-science that doesn't work. Maybe someday if someone invents conversion therapy that works and that is backed by science we'll have to discuss conversion itself. Nowadays, we aren't even discussing conversion itself, we're discussing charlatanism and false advertisement.

Or you can go the Iran route and just give sex change to gay men, now they're straight women.

I also don't consider marriage a human right, by very definition. It's pretty trivial.

Marriage itself isn't a human right. But equality before the law is. And it's not only about the marriage itself, many systems in modern societies are based on the concept of marriage. While your co-workers are all getting medical insurance for their partners, you might not be able to get it just because your same-sex partner isn't legally married to you. If marriage is irrelevant then go and remove the concept of marriage from law altogether.

I don't know why you even brought up human rights though. We have many rights in modern societies that aren't basic human rights. Consumer rights are rights all the same, even if they don't address basic human rights. I don't see why only when it comes to LGB rights then it should be all about basic human rights.

Okay but regular therapy isn't "psuedo science that doesn't work". And getting it "backed by science" aka actually tested and reviewed is going to be near impossible when the public has declared it's a "hate crime" to question homosexuality at all.

And it's not only about the marriage itself, many systems in modern societies are based on the concept of marriage.

And that's an issue. Homosexuals aren't the only people less likely to marry. The concept of marriage itself is outdated, backwards, and unfair. It's more logical to dismantle the system than say "look, everyone should have equal access to this flawed concept."

I'm just saying I don't believe LGB people lack rights in any way, not in first world countries and even outside, the "gay hating" places are usually oppressive for everyone and not just a gay issue.

Because if we keep pushing this narrative that homosexuals are always lacking rights when we aren't, and that we need more "rights" which are just re-worded privileges, then we are doing the exact same thing as TRAs.

Marriage is woman slavery, not a right. People don’t read.

Exactly, and it's not progressive or inspiring when the woman is swapped out for a "man in a woman's role" who is designated to be the one who is "owned." There is an unwritten rule in homosexual relationships that states one must be the "woman", aka, the subordinate. It's horrible and I can't see how "progressive" people see it as a win.

I was actually googling "conversion therapy" just yesterday, and I mostly saw it defined as "attempting to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity."

I think that you can't change a person's sexual orientation. I also think you can't make a super effeminate little boy more masculine, but it seems like how that kid interprets his gender non-conformity is actually quite variable, and subject to change. And I think trans-identified kids would really benefit from being challenged on beliefs in therapy.

So "no conversion therapy" laws can be really detrimental on the gender front, depending on how they're worded. Just something to be aware of.

It's probably more like they're going to argue against Trans using sex-segregated spaces of the opposite sex, restricting self-id, and maybe looking at restricting giving puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, and banning lifechanging and irreversible operations to children under 18.

They tag the LGB on the front in order to deflect attention from what are reasonable policies.
