we’ll all have a much happier pride month if we stand up for each other against the real sources of hatred

Ah, yes, the real sources of hatred are the lesbians.

I wonder if these people would be fine with saying that anyone can identify with other minorities, like racial minorities.

LOL, right!

lesbian, gay, and queer are all slurs. they’ve all been used to insult us

Insult? I mean, lesbians and gay men are fine with being called lesbians and gay. So what's the argument again, who is being insulted?

anyone can identify with other minorities, like racial minorities

Anytime someone brings that up, they backpedal and go the "no true Scotsman" route, and then try to redirect the argument to something else.

I was thinking more about statistics and stuff. For example, we can try to understand effects of structural racism by looking at statistics of different groups. If people suddenly started identifying as a new race, then this would skew statistics and other discussions. How can people discuss the racial discrimination they face when other people that never faced racial discrimination are demanding to use the same space to talk about their new-race?

Yet this is what is happening with queer people. Sure, in something they're right: they are "accepting" everyone. Which means the queer category goes from gays/lesbians who are coopted to use the word all the way to straight people who use it to be special. How can we discuss the discriminations that LGB face when every discussion must include Q people, considering that lots of Q people are actually just straight people that will never face any discrimination? How can we have accurate understanding about the issues that gay/lesbian/bi people are facing when they're being coopted to identify as queer?

please remember that ‘queer’ has been a fully reclaimed, non-slur identity for decades now

Reclaimed for decades, huh ... strange, I've only been hearing it claimed as a non-slur for the past few years, and by non-LGBs.

queer studies is a legitimate academic term

It's an academic term, really ... source, please. Using fascism to overwhelm and silence academia doesn't mean you've made slurs "legitimate".

it’s only been in the last decade that TERFs have pushed to reclassify it as a ‘slur’ starting in online spaces

TERFs are the only ones using the word poorly ... are you sure? Like REALLY REALLY sure?

'Cause last time I heard it IRL, it was sneered at my straight male friend and immediately followed by "faggot". It sure as shit wasn't a RadFem doing the talking, and no one even mentioned trans, let alone trans-exclusion.

people that don’t want to be called queer don’t have to be

Great, I'm glad we agree on something! Now about those people you're lumping into the "queer" umbrella without their consent ...

queer is a valid term with decades of history

Well, you ARE right about there being decades of history, I'll give you that. "Valid", on the other hand ...

millions of proudly self-identified people

I think someone may be exaggerating, just a teensy-weensy bit.

Lol right? When they wanna say something positive about gays/lesbians it's always "a queer person", "a LGBTQ+ person", etc. At least in the Gaybros sub I've seen reactions to that, sometimes people post something positive about "a LGBT man" and some of the comments will be like "so is this man lesbian, gay, bi and trans all at once?".

But when they want to criticize and mock others, suddenly it's "the gay community", "the lesbian community", etc. I remember months ago seeing a case on twitter of someone who saw a guy being rude with his mother while showing gay stereotypes. The person made a criticism of gay community as a whole because of that, saying that gay men are rude and mysoginist etc. Funny how at times like this it's ok to assume gender (what if he was non-binary or trans?) and it's ok to assume sexuality (what if he was bi or queer?).

Ok wow that's actually really true. There is a ton of bashing specific sub-communities but only positivity for the vaguely-defined "queer" people.

Yeah, wtf???

A message for all the "queer" people out there:

If you call yourself and want to be called "queer", go ahead. It's your funeral. But don't force that word on me; I don't want to be called "queer". And please respect the wishes of other gay, lesbian or bisexual people who do not want to be called "queer".

By the way, "queer studies" is not a legitimate academic term. Universities that offer this course should be denied funding from the government.

I'm a LESBIAN and if you ever lump me into the "queer uwu" umbrella bullshit, I won't just passively accept it. Lesbian and gay are specific labels that exclude the opposite sex. Queer is so vague that it basically refers to girls with badly dyed hair and face piercings.

Q-slur was reclaimed only to become another slur, this time used to erase words "Gay" and "Lesbian" from news articles and other media. Description of movie "story of queer people" anyone?

no one can say you’re not really queer, because if you say you’re queer, you are.

Sounds like "because if you call yourself 'idiot', most likely - you are".

Also, why is Tumblr such absolute shit? I'm trying to look at the replies and maybe I'm doing it wrong. Do I really have to scroll through a huge list of likes and reblogs and randomly see comments or is there an easier way?

[–]xanditAGAB (Assigned Gay at Birth) 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

yeah I can't see any comments?

[–]reluctant_commenter[S] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Okay, I don't know but it drives me batty too!! I don't have a Tumblr account. Also they never date posts, why??

Ah, if you have the app there's a way you can look at only the comments. But you still have to scroll regardless.

edit: I don't have tons of time for it right now but I'll figure out a way to post some screenshots / summarize the comments. There are a ton of them.

people that don’t want to be called queer don’t have to be

Really? You promise? Ok, then we all opt out and expect not to be subjected to all this pearl-clutching for doing so.
