This, in 100 words, is everything that is wrong with modern academia.

I had to google this because I was sure this had to be one of those fake research papers that got published and found this:

https://www.peachtreepeartree.com/blog/2018/3/11/drones-are-not-queer-bodies-and-other-sentences-i-cant-believe-i-have-to-write

Anyway, Cara Daggett is an actual person and this is an actual paper that she wrote, on purpose, not as a joke. Holy fuck.

You saved me to google it, because I thought the same!

Right, aside from QUEER-QUEER-QUEER, I can't even figure out what they're trying to say.

descriptions of drone warfare are rife with symptoms of an unresolved disorientation, often expressed as gender anxiety over the failure of the distance–intimacy and home–combat axes to orient killing with drones

Wut.

I thought the author was trying to say, “traditional warfare is like masculine sexuality but drone form is a very emasculated male sexuality.” While it’s already a strange claim that doesn’t take into the practical reasons for drone warfare (fiscal cost, psychological cost for soldiers, etc.), it’s also incomprehensible word salad.

Welcome to Gender Theory. Where practicality, logistics, politics, and all other considerations are of insignificant importance to the all-illuminating gendered interpretation.

Cara Daggett is completing her PhD in political science at Johns Hopkins University, where her current research investigates the ethical legacies of energy physics and poses alternatives inspired by feminist and post-work politics. She specializes in environmental politics as well as feminist approaches to science and technology.

"Energy physics" huh. I have no idea what that is or how it connects to "ethical legacies", must be my lack of education. (Does this science work out how many Joules per person tied to the trolley tracks?)

"Post-work politics" doesn't exist because there will always be work. Where does this person think food comes from?

"feminist approaches to science" as opposed to what?

So basically this person makes shit up and puts letters after her name for it?

This person decided not to pursue a real science because it was difficult, now blames the patriarchy for it and attempts to approach science from another field. Needless to say she is totally unqualified to speak about any science, so publishes bullshit instead (and not very frequently from what it seems).

That's the academic equivalent of eating your boogers. Instead of asking about killing indirectly being easier psychologically for humans, and what are the ethical implications of that militarily? ...you frame it as "queer"/sexually.

My god, I thought this was part of that thing where they made those fake research papers up, and now I realize that's why they made the fake research papers up. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/new-sokal-hoax/572212/

How the fuck did that get published?

I made my wife read this and summarize it and all she said was, "drones are gay."

We still have no idea what the fuck the author was going on about.
