It all depends on how it is presented. In most cases it is facepalm-worthy (as written by someone far from LGB), but sometimes it is pretty good. And if story starts with characters already being LGB and not focusing on that, then it is fine in most cases as well.

When the charatcter hasn't their sexuality as their main defining feature, it's ok. I played the last of us 2, where the protagonist is a lesbian and her sexuality is portraited exactly like it would be if she were a hetero dude. She just likes girls, and the story is all very natural, without big deal about it or being a big part of her character.

Does anyone know the context about the woman in the photos? Where was she? What was she doing? What's up with those facial expressions???

As for what you said, I agree with you. I love seeing LGB characters, as well as intersex (I've only seen an intersex character on one show, Faking It on MTV and it was pretty well done, I think.) And I honestly wouldn't mind Asexual characters as well as long as the character was TRULY asexual with zero sexual/romantic interest in anyone. People like that do exist. Could be a medical issue or not, IDK that far, but I do like to see them because sometimes I like watching shows/movies where there is no sex/love/romance at all.

Transsexuals are okay too! I love watching Pose!

With LGB, T, I, and A, what I would really really really love is for actual LGB, T, I, and/or A to be involved in writing/creating or consulting. I don't want to see some bullshit written by some rando who was just told to include a diverse character just for the sake of woke-points. I want actual, accurate representation.

But Tumblrsexuals? Nonbinaries? Weird shit where it's obvious even the writers have no clue WTF to do with this character??? No, leave that shit out, please. There are going to be so many shows out there that are going to age so badly. People 10,20,30 years from now are going to be looking at these characters like... Yes, and this is the exact point where everyone started believing that the naked emperor was covered in clothes made of the finest silk and jewels. This generation is going to be the laughingstock of future generations. I feel so bad for Millenials. They got screwed over by the Boomers, and in the future they're going to be blamed for everything stupid that's happening right now by Gen-Z/Gen-Alpha.

The photo is taken hugely out of context. It is a funny meme, but she is actually being pretty chill. The power of selective editing and presentation.

Thank you! I know she's looking real cray-cray in the photos, but I kind of had a feeling about her, I don't know how to explain it, that's why I was asking about context. She didn't give me the "Trigglypuff" vibes for some reason.

It really depends on how it is done. If the characters just an overused stereotype or just dropped in there for the politics sake. Like say including someone who's demigender or whatever the newest craze is now. If the character is written well and the story benefits then it's fine. At least that's my take on it

Quality over quantity for me. I have little use for, and even less desire to see, gay stereotype characters. A character who happens to be lgb? Awesome. But so often, it is just done for diversity points and the lgb character is so over the top it borders on insulting. But what incentive is there for production companies to create nuanced, interesting gay characters? They get lauded and celebrated just for having a gay character no matter how stereotypical the portrayal is. I am all for more visibility for lgb people in media because it was something sorely lacking when I was growing up in the 90s, but so often it is done poorly.

You know why I don't like the whole forced minority thing; because it's a trope. It's always a trans woman who's parents disowned her, the gay guy who had a homophobic father, the lesbian who was bullied by a group of mean girls at school. But all of that literally will have nothing to do with the plot of the story. Why do we need to know the life history of a trans woman's transition into a woman in a movie about bank robbers and high speed car chase? What does being raised by a homophobic parent have to deal with space aliens invading the planet? I really wish creators would stop shoehorning minorities in for the sole propose of virtue signalling.

The US entertainment industry is full of lost souls, with an ounce of brains between them, who glom on to the latest trends. Also, a considerable number of the power brokers in the industry are sexually fluid, especially actors. As well, cross-dressing in private wouldn't even raise an eyebrow. And, sadly, a lot of the more prominent industry people are not so secretly bat shit crazy.

The T are on trend at the moment, and the very well-funded, staggeringly well-connected trans lobby is pushing them, but the Ts who have been let into the industry are kinda the "bat shit crazy" types, so I don't know how long we are going to have to endure almost every TV series and movie having a T or NB character awkwardly inserted.

Personally, I love it when media shoehorn LGB characters for recognition and brownie points and a big deal is made about it.

It's a clear admission that they know whatever they were making wouldn't be successful enough on its own merits, so they need to scramble for the lowest hanging fruit possible. Saves me money on what would have likely been a very disappointing purchase.

I have a knee jerk reaction every time I hear the word "gender". I'm sick of identity politics, I don't want to hear about them anymore.

I'm of the mind that as long as it's not out of place, well written, and doesn't completely dominate the plot I'll consume the media without many objections. I take these things on a case by case basis. Representation is generally a good thing, unless that's their main and only goal of making the art and there's not anything else of value they are showcasing. Then I'll probably consider it rather specialized and boring.

Anyway, you just reminded me of a game I was going to post about here. I should just do it already.

at this point I would just like characters that are lgb and not just to have a coming out story or plots revolving around their sexuality. Been done to death.

Funny you should bring this up. I just got the new book “The Living Dead” by George A. Romero (Guillermo del Toro collaborated when George died) and Daniel Kraus and wouldn’t you know, in a book about zombies, they have to reference someone being trans. It came out from left field and was really jarring. It wasn’t even relevant to the story. I cringed so hard.

Trying to get into the book, so far, a couple of chapters in, having a hard time getting engaged. (Nothing to do with the T.)

I don’t get care about the representation of LGBT in the media or video game or whatever. What I detest is how they will just butcher a character and make their personality based on their sexuality or “gender representation”.

It’s like religion, don’t go shoving that shit down my throat.
