Here's a direct link to the trailer, although I think it doesn't do justice to the film: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_2KMm49B6pE

Ah, it is HBO one, so should be there. Sadly it is not available in my country, so I will need to sail a boat.

On my previous job I had a person from Chechnya, who run away just few weeks before missile bombings of Grozny. Horrible stuff.

Jeez. Hoping they're doing well. The thing is even after emigration the going is so tough. The recent news of Sarah Hegazy (she was persecuted in Egypt for being gay) was completely devastating. As someone who had to emigrate temporarily I know how alienating it feels being in a foreign country, add being gay/lesbian on top of that, add history of abuse (in Sarah's case) and it's just... No words. That's why LGB spaces are so important! I just want to say that for many US and Canadian people their local gay bar is a great meet up place and maybe not more, but for exchange students, for imigrants or just for a gay tourist this may be the first place of normality and the first place of safety they ever experienced. I will forever love Ireland for being that welcoming place for me and giving me a second family even though I'm back to my homophobic country now.

Edit:spelling

Well, they ran away before that happened, so they are pretty fine.

And yeah, I've never been to any lesbian (or gay) bars, so not even sure what it even is.

It sounds like you are one of the trailblazers who just got on with their lives through hell and high water. I just meant to say that lgb spaces, even though they are not for everyone, can be a great place to just feel good and be among your people for once. The simple stuff of having a good time with your gf at a party, without worrying in the slightest about anything. And for me, the best thing was enjoying the sense of community, just dancing our hearts out, almost as if in spite to the world and all the shit it throws at you. As I write this I realize maybe my idea of community and freedom is outdated and naive, but hell let it be so... Those were simpler times :)

Better "outdated", than woke!

As a Russian, this is fake news/propaganda used to distract people (Americans, Russians, and others alike) to possibly distract people from the real issues, and most likely - farm profits.

I have personally spoken to other Russians about the issue. Including openly gay/bi people in Chechnya who have told me there is NO SUCH THING and that they are NOT in any danger. Sure, Russia is conservative, and Chechnya probably more so, but there is absolutely NO evidence of any "purges" or "gay death camps."

I have searched extensively for sources and actual proof of such thing, in both English and Russian (I understand both) and the ONLY thing close to a "source" I have found was "Witnesses told the Russian LGBT network that this thing exists."

The ONLY source is a organization called "Russian LGBT network". Now, this organization is suspicious for several reasons. They refuse to back up their claims, they don't have much public information about what (if anything) they do, but they keep asking for donations. I can't find any evidence that they help real people - sure, they might claim they do, but much like American or UK LGBT organizations, they may just farm profits, push propaganda, and ignore LGB people in need.

Think about it this way - if being gay WAS a death sentence in Russia, just merely for existing, how would a "LGBT network" so openly exist without issue? Why isn't the Russian government making a big deal out of people talking about this? Because it's not real.

Do not buy into propaganda. Stop sharing fake news. Stop sharing stuff without sources. I feel like people are generally aware of propaganda and fake news BUT only if it's AGAINST their political viewpoint or narrative. For example, left-leaning people are very quick to spot and dismiss right-wing propaganda and fake news, but propaganda that appears to have a viewpoint similar to their own (in this case, appearing to be pro-gay, but judging by the fact that this LGBT network does nothing, I don't think that's even true) they absorb without question.

Do not let anything be free from criticism and investigation. Propaganda like this only fuels xenophobia and, like I said, is most likely making this shady organization a lot of money. This was created to drive a wedge between US and Russia, to make USA "progressives" hate us.

If you want to help LGB Russians, DO NOT DONATE TO THIS ORGANIZATION. The only way you can ensure the money goes to a good cause is to donate to people directly. Or better yet, refocus your energy on tackling the very real problems in Russia - the corrupt government, the misogynistic culture, the outdated and restrictive religious "tradition" driving our society. It's very possible that this shady organization is HARMING people for the sake of pushing a false agenda, or making profit.

Please, when it comes to other countries, trust the people who have seen it and can speak the language, not outside sites.

I understand that the use of the word "purge" may sound overblown to someone living in Russia, and granted, it sure may be used to drive the point home for those living outside Russia/Europe. Plus, marketing the doc. But at the same time, at how many cases of tortured people and police complacency in violence against lgb people or even violence can we start saying "purge" - 100, 200? I am not being confrontational, just adding my perspective to it. Also as is stated in the documentary, the police violence seems to have ended a while ago. And the org clearly says that they do few evacuations now, but they still provide services to those who have left Chechnya and are now living across Russia. In fairness of course there can be questions raised about any organization that works on a sensitive issue, where a lot of info about them and the people they help cannot be disclosed lest the victims be identified. That is why I gave the link to the org site plus the issue has been pretty well covered by Western media. And people should watch the doc as well of course. So, with your perspective and the above, it is for each of us to form an opinion. Regarding additional sources: https://assembly.coe.int/nw/xml/XRef/Xref-XML2HTML-en.asp?fileid=24805&lang=en

Nothing about that link indicates "gay killings". I'm also skeptical that it says "LGBTI" instead of... well, gay. Transgender people aren't really accepted in Russia (or nearby countries... or pretty much anywhere that isn't English speaking countries and Nordic countries lol) but that's not "a death purge." It just means transition may not be accepted, men won't be given access to women's spaces... you get the idea.

I don't deny that Chechnya is not gonna be great given the religious influence. But jumping from "This country is dominated by a sexist religion that rejects anything other than restrictive and oppressive heterosexual marriages" to "THIS COUNTRY IS LITERALLY MURDERING GAYS AND PUTIN IS ENDORSING IT AAAAAA" is beyond stupid.

Sorry, but photographic and video evidence is more than enough to know what's going on. It's better information than a secondhand account from someone claiming to be LGB and from Chechnya on the Internet.

There is no photographic or video evidence, tho. I've looked.
