Someone read the history of drag on Wikipedia obviously, which credits William Dorsey Swann as the first drag queen. But then talks about how men have been dressing up as women forever as part of theater or vaudeville. Drag is also a polari term. But yes, a black man in America in 1880s created it. 🙄

It really does go waaay farther back than that particular person. AFAIK men were crossdressing in Ancient Greek theatre, and I’m about 99% sure that a few of them were fruits lol. But it’s just funny to see how dogmatically they’ll dismiss any concrete evidence that goes against their “black trans women created your history and culture, you owe us” narrative. You have a gay black male ex-slave/early gay rights advocate basically calling himself a drag queen and they go “d-doesn’t matter, black trans women invented drag queens, end of discussion”. It’s no wonder phrases like “facts don’t care about your feelings” make them so mad.

The cult of Hermaphroditos required patrons to cross-dress during religious rituals.
