Jerusalem has always been the prized land of the papacy pursuant to Catholic replacement theology; that is, the teaching that the church has replaced Israel and the true Jews now are the adherents of the Christian Catholic religion, and therefore the promise given to the Jews to inherit that land is actually ceded to the church. This doctrine was the basis for the crusade in the holy land:

We also see the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano remarked in 1948:
"Modern Zionism is not the true successor of Biblical Israel…therefore the Holy Land and the Holy Sites belong to Christianity, which is the true Israel."

Since 1814, the Jesuits have ruled the Catholic church, and they have continued in the same tradition of replacement theology, for the Jesuits are the new incarnation of the Knights Templars.
One of the original goals of the Jesuit Order was to take Jerusalem from the Saracens:

Fast-forward to the early 20th century during World War I:
Church bells rang in Rome when General Allenby marched into Jerusalem capturing it from the Muslims on December 11, 1917, the same date as the start of the infamous Siege of Ma’aarra in the first Crusade:
The capture of Jerusalem caught the imagination of the allied world. In Rome the church bells rang out in triumph, as did the bells of London's Roman Catholic Cathedral.

On this day in 1098, the Siege of Ma’aarra, a long and infamous siege during the First Crusade in which some Crusaders massacred and feasted on their Muslim enemies, took place in the city of Ma’aarat al-Numan, in modern-day Syria...the Crusaders poured over the walls of the fortified city on 11 December, leading the Muslims to retreat within.

Major Vivian Gilbert who was in the 20th century Battle of Jerusalem even wrote a book called The Romance of the Last Crusade: With Allenby to Jerusalem.

There is a building named after Bloomfield on the St. Francis Xavier campus called the Bloomfield Centre. Bloomfield was trained by Jesuits at St. Francis Xavier University on the doctoral level as well as at Catholic St. Thomas University:

As revealed in the early 1990s, under the Fundamental Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel, the Vatican wants Jerusalem internationalized under the jurisdiction of Rome:

This is what is happening with the Israel/Palestine conflict.

What about Palestine? They're the good guys according to a lot of virtue signaling people right? Well it may surprise those readers to know that the government in Palestine - the Palestinian Authority, is backed by the CIA. Compromised high-ranking Palestinian officials share wiretapped communications of their colleagues with the CIA, and the CIA and Palestinian state have a longstanding, tight-knit relationship:
The allegations did not come as a surprise to many Palestinians. Officials have admitted to wiretapping in the past, and the CIA has had a long-standing relationship with Palestinian security officials.
Since the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in the 1990s, there has been continuous cooperation between U.S. intelligence and Palestinian security officials. Palestinian officials have shared information they gather in the region, including about Palestinian militant activities. The U.S. has also provided the Palestinian Authority with training and technical assistance.
The leaders of both of these countries meet with the pope, who is using this dialectic to advance the Vatican's Jerusalem agenda which will involve a two-state plan with Jerusalem becoming an international city under Roman Catholic jurisdiction, as was documented at the end of the first part of the writeup.
