Japan's Self Defense Force is very different from most armies. That is, most militaries have a relatively small cadre of officers and senior NCOs compared to enlisted. Japan is just the opposite, with a large group of experienced, well-trained officers and NCOs but fairly few enlisted or lower ranking members. Why? If needed, draft measures could be initiated and within months Japan could have a large standing army led by experienced people.
