The proliferation of advertising in the twentieth century instilled this mindset in people of perpetual need and inadequacy, creating consumers who never feel fulfilled. Social media has had a similar effect in ruining communities, by encouraging behaviors which attract the most attention (to advertising), while robbing us of more constructive meaning and purpose.
