Recapture a lost world

This is not my first post. It took a while to organize what I wanted to say. I miss the old, less political, less commercialized internet. In my little way, I'll try to contribute with interesting links I find along the way and hopefully revive the spirit in this tiny corner. I hope others will too.

Well, the beauty of internet is that it's like space. You can put anything here and set up your own cosy corners. So, yes, please do! I am sure you will find those who are like you and I am sure there are many.

I don’t see why people get so wrapped around the axle over things that have no real bearing on their life and locked-into tribal politics, internet conspiracies and social media identity drama that, in the end, doesn’t really matter.

I think it starts with wanting a just world and as you've said people lose focus on their own sphere of influence because they feel so passionate.

We had high hopes for what would be called internet. The bulletin boards and forums were buzzing with like-minded people sharing. The ‘net would make all knowledge available to anyone, anywhere, uplift and unite all cultures.

Riding the digital since the ‘80s but I loathed Faceplant and was too busy for social media. Recently, due to injury, I made a foray into social media for the first time (just reddit, same username as here) and found it informative and engaging. Often, I am shocked by the lack of civil discourse in any comment section. Saying things that, back in the day, would get you punched-out - not just downvoted. Argumentative, antagonistic people fuelling political strife, intolerance and indecency. The obsession with easily refuted flat-Earth or moon landing hoax and that the world is run by a pedo-cannibal cabal of shape shifting reptiles from the fourth dimension.

Like any technology, it is a double-edged sword for good use or bad but this is especially useful to divide and conquer, keep us distracted while the real world burns. Sadly, I can’t help but see that this … “thing” from Pandora’s box will ultimately be the undoing of Humanity.

I hope it isn't our ultimate undoing. Certainly, there are already negative effects.

I hope we'll get a hold of ourselves. The old days were a dream but I'm certain we can have better now if we decide that's what we want and stop waiting on someone else to fix it.

One look at the front page and comments of this and many sites shows we are lost at sea. Captains log: passengers hacking holes in the ship, no lifeboats. Crew in open mutiny - it’s us against them, every man for himself.
