Reddit was actually a equal competitor with digg even before digg changed. I was around on reddit when the exodus happened and frankly digg users lowered the tone on reddit. Before that reddiquette was followed quite well across the site, moderation was quite hands off. The influx of new users that just didn't give a fuck about reddit's founding principles was the start of its downfall.
