Why can't we get normies to join? Why's it always this type?
[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago* (11 children)
Hell if I know, probably because they're deliberately sabotaging the site and people who do that make a lot of noise. This guy will probably be banned soon tbh, he's already advocated mass violence once and thus has one strike. And I'm sure he'll cry about being a victim, as is the usual for types who advocate violence, and then will probably go on reddit and post about how saidit is full of censorship. It's a pattern I've seen replicated over a dozen times already. It's hard not to view it as a deliberate attack on the website when the pattern is repeated in such similar ways. Maybe this guy will be different, and realize after this first strike that violence advocation is not allowed here. I sure hope so. I guess we will see...

Why would you say it's deliberate? It sounds like someone who just got banned and went somewhere else. That's the problem, if we don't populate with normies somehow, it's going to be ALL people who got banned. That's not good.
[–]magnora7 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (4 children)
Sometimes I think it's deliberate, other times not.
it's going to be ALL people who got banned. That's not good.
Yeah this is kind of the core issue with post-reddit sites. I think a lot of people are just waiting for reddit to finally fall
[–]Chipit 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (3 children)
It's going to be years for that to happen, if it ever does. Reddit has tons of non-political content that provides a lot of value. Tons of subs about specific video games. Moms chat. Health advice. Financial planning that isn't "buy bitcoin".
That's what saidit needs. But I don't know how to get it.
[–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago* (2 children)
I think you might be right. Digg.com had a very sudden collapse, but the subreddit system of reddit compartmentalizes the damage quite nicely so the the site as a whole has persisted much longer than digg ever did. I have always said that the moment they removed old.reddit.com (thus forcing the new site design on everyone) is when the big influx will happen, but they seem to maybe not ever be removing old.reddit.com, which is a surprise to me. Perhaps they're smart enough to know what problems it will cause. I just wonder if the investors of their 2020 IPO will foolishly demand it though, I could see that causing a collapse of sorts.
But the core issue is that if you have a nice hobby community that has 5000 people, and another one that has 100 people, and they're of equal quality, people will almost always choose the 5000 people one. I don't know any way we can reasonably hope to get those people to use saidit. It's kind of a "100th monkey effect" where things become popular because they're popular. It's a chicken and egg thing. We'll get there someday, but there really isn't an easy solution to getting more "normie" users other than simply being popular. And we're slowly getting more popular, so if we can just avoid the culture falling to some brand of extremism, we will keep growing. However walking the line between "avoiding extremism" and "censoring people's opinions" is very thin, and furthermore deliberately clouded by those spreading extremism. How exactly that line is drawn is what ends up determining the character of every anonymous social media website.

That is a fantastic thing for a new guy to read. Thanks for putting it out there, both of you.
I'm unsure how to participate here since I typically always went niche on reddit. But...... there are no niches yet. So if I'm going to take the plunge 100% it's more a matter of being part of the larger subs, watching and waiting, and supporting niche when it comes.
I think I'm normal........

Welcome! It is a medium-sized community right now so the best thing is to check out the 'all' page https://saidit.net/s/all
And you can even mute subs from that list to tailor it to what you want. Right now I think that's the best way to browse the site. Let me know if you ever have any questions

I'm not endorsing anything the guy posted but you should be happy that people see this site as a refuge from censorship. Not everyone is highly socialized and highly attuned to political correctness and the pyramid of debate (and that's a good thing).
I warned you 6 months that this site will go nowhere if you over police and attempt to turn it into another PC echo chamber. People will find other alternatives...
[–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (2 children)
I agree, but if we let it be a free-for-all and let horrible people take over the site culture through sheer persistence, then people will also leave and find other alternatives... it's an impossibly thin line to walk. We are trying our best to balance it
[–]send_nasty_stuff 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (1 child)
then people will also leave and find other alternatives
This is true. I'm still here and still promote saidit because I think you are successfully walking this line but it's an easier line to walk when you're a smaller site.

it's an easier line to walk when you're a smaller site.
Definitely. As it gets bigger the number of conflicting demands from the users becomes larger

/me is this type
/me sweats profusely
Normies have many outlets that they can choose from. Facebook is still going strong. Twitter is normie heaven.
Consider this place as a refugee camp.
Except everyone has chosen to be a refugee instead of conforming.
[–]Chipit 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (5 children)
That's bad. I want saidit to be a legitimate reddit alternative. That means normies. Funny GIFs, cat videos, the whole thing. If it's just extremists nobody else will join and reddit will maintain its stranglehold.
[–]magnora7 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (4 children)
We could start another saidit-like site for more normie content, where extremist content is banned even more rigorously than here. But people will say it's full of censorship, which will be required to keep the content from having any extremism, so I'm not sure it'd catch on. But it might be worth a try. I wouldn't mind having a couple different saidit-like sites with different rules, I mean we already have the software in place to do this very easily.
[–]Chipit 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (3 children)
What I'm talking about is a site like Reddit pre-November 2016. Where people can post whatever, and nobody really cares. You don't like it, unsubscribe or block the channel. Political, normie, it's all good.
But all politics is going to scare off the normies and we'll never get that old Reddit back.
That's exactly what this website is... exactly.
Not sure what to change other than posting better stuff (but I can't carry the culture of the website on my back alone, I need help from others posting quality things) and maybe deleting some political stuff, and I don't like deleting stuff. I don't see any other options, do you?
[–]Chipit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - 4 years ago (0 children)
We must figure out a way to attract normies and then not scare them away with extremism.

I agree with the everything on this list except for:
political realism
economic collapse

survivalism
I dont even know what this is. Does this mean going out and catching your own food? Surviving in the wilderness with nothing but your wits and a knife?
If it doesnt mean that, then its bullshit.
