Shrinking or not, the web is quickly centralizing. This is helped by increasing regulation, increasing prices for network access, domain names, and hosting.

I blame Google. Google searches have become propaganda searches and are heavily curated. If your site isn't getting hits, then money doesn't come in. There are services that make your Google search results visible, but you have to pay and keep updating it.

This trend has been apparent across all industries as conglomerates tweak their production at scale innovation is stifled in leu of profits and skilled workers choose employment security over industry disruption.
