The government won't allow the 'digital economy' to contract in any meaningful way, because if they did their whole surveillance/control structure would be the first to collapse.

Consider the valuable "services" DARPAGoogle and FaCIAbook in their present form provide, that are illegal/unconstitutional for government to perform:

  1. Act as data-vacuum and honey-pot to attract and compile data on 'troublemakers'.
  2. Perform Ministry-of-Truth thought-shaping, gatekeeping/filtering and propaganda-dissemination while posing as a "private companies"
  3. Now with more Memory-Holes® to 'keep us safe from misinformation'.

If government could legally do any of that directly, it would cost ten times as much and work one tenth as well. Which is why all this Congressional and Executive-branch posturing (regulate! | break 'em up!) lately is just diversionary.
