Lots of cons are nonsensical, it's extremely easy to set your own server up if you use Luke Smith's emailwiz.

One pro is also incorrect, and that is "It's private by default". It's not. It's literally just plain text or HTML. Unless you encrypt it with PGP, it will be readable by anyone on the server. And also the thing with encryption is that metadata will also be visible, i.e. subject of the message, headers, date, recepient, etc., etc.

I think setup may not be the most difficult part. The hard thing is if you run into trouble, you need to be a good sys admin to hunt issues down.

That's not a skill most people have.

Most of the issues I had were resolved simply by re-running the script, machine reboot or propagating DNS records again. Although yeah, small errors can give you shit sometimes, but I disagree it's that hard.

Yeh again, there's a difference between set and forget, and hunting down issues.

I've been my own sysadmin and mail server admin for a few years now because I do software architecture for work.

Things like using the postfix mail-id or mail queue to determine why a message isn't being delivered or being sent, correctly using dovecot, etc.

What's more difficult as well are all the hoops to go thru to get your email delivered to Google. Which is hard but can be done, however, Outlook, or sending mail to someone with MS account, is very difficult I to not have email go to spam.

You are posting good shit my man. Having dealt with configuring DKIM and SPF for sending loads of emails, it's a real mess!
