Too bad it's not FOSS (I'll wait with trying the extension). Not sure who is behind it, if the party is trusted. If I understand correctly, then it works by sending links of all visited YT videos to their server(s) which could be a privacy issue.

Youtube used to be better when they were first getting started. The UI was good. The ability to reply with a video was HUGE. Many big youtube stars were built on reply videos. The algorithm worked to find other channels you would like based on the preferences of people who liked the video you just liked. It all just worked.

So why the fuck is there not a youtube alternative that is literally a copy of that? Is it that hard to copy what they did?

I think there are a few. There's bitview.net, and vidlii.com which look pretty close to old youtube. I don't know if they lack old features or what, all I know is that branding is essentially magick and youtube still has brand power. On a related note, that also seems to be the reason that better things don't always replace inferior iterations of the principle, the thing to be replaced has to suck mega-ass too.
