Hahaha wow, this was a nice surprise. I thought this would be the amount of homicides per gun type. Maybe someone can fill me in on this: was it 80% of all gun related deaths are by illegal handguns? or was it 80% of all gun homicides.

I remember hearing something like this in a vice documentary about illegal handguns, but I can't seem to find it. https://www.politifact.com/new-york/statements/2018/mar/12/john-faso/do-illegal-gun-owners-commit-most-gun-crime-rep-fa/

Judging by how mealy mouthed politifact is being, I can imagine it being true. Though as they say, it's impossible to track the data.

Edit: Most gun-related crimes are carried out with illegally owned firearms—as much as 80 percent according to some estimates. Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/07/27/new-evidence-confirms-what-gun-rights-advocates-have-been-saying-for-a-long-time-about-crime/

So I was wrong. This is reporting it as someone illegally possessing a firearm owned by someone else.

Mmm I was under the impression the 80% referred to illegally manufactured weapons in the likes of Asia that are smuggled in. Ones with no serial that are untraceable used by gangbangers. If this was the case, restricting people's access to weapons legally would have serious negative consequences.
