It's just another example of a word that's lost all meaning (kind of like incel itself, come to think of it).
It's hilarious to think that there are waste-of-space journalists, from absolute dog-shit publications like MEL Magazine, who are paid to churn out useless think pieces with titles like 'Monitoring the rise of the incel movement' and 'This is why schools need to tackle incel ideology'.
I agree that there's a slacktivism aspect behind their bullshit. I think that they go after incels, as a collective, because a) they're a low-hanging fruit who are socially acceptable to shit on; and b) they confirm their little pre-existing narrative about evil, sexually entitled white males or something.
I think that there's an element of censorship at play, too. If you can promote fear mongering about something and label it as a scary-sounding ideology, you can have it isolated and shunned. It's all just self preservation from normies. It's like how they'll use 'right wing' as a pejorative against anything that goes against their worldview.
