There are some things there that basically anyone can do like copywriting, SEO, editing, etc...
The only really hard part is getting approved into the website. I recommend that when you first create your profile, pretend that you have very in-demand skills, fill it out stating that you are an experienced software engineer with proficiency in a dozen programing languages, machine learning, blockchain development, yada yada... Then once you get approved, change your profile to reflect the area you actually want to work on. Worked like a charm for me.
PS: Also, if you have access to a VPN, make sure to set your location to the US.

blockchain development
Is that a real thing? I hire developers and I might call BS on that one.

Blockchain is a real technology and there are plenty of blockchain related jobs on Upwork, also I put "Blockchain Development" on my skills list and got accepted into the platform. So I guess yeah?

So WTF do you do as a blockchain developer? Is it mostly wrapping APIs in Python or what?

I have no idea actually, it's just a skill that seemed in demand and that I put on a list to get approved on the website. xD
