So I understand that the chat box on the right hand of every sub is an IRC chatroom. How can I access it through my client separate from the website? saidit.net/6697 isn't working

I believe it's broken until they get a new server.

Oh OK, fair enough. If it's true I'll keep on the lookout. Would be fun to be able to use it in my client

Right now there's no external access allowed. We've gone back and forth on this. The demand has been low. If enough people ask for it we will do it.
