Why is hydrogen production suddenly in the news so much lately. We have known how to get hydrogen out of water for a century or more yet the media is hyping it like it is a brand new high tech thing. It's not. It's so old school cool it farts dust.

Why is hydrogen production suddenly in the news so much lately.

Because 3 things make today different than the other 2 times H2 was hyped. First, the cost of the Fuel Cell stack itself is almost affordable, now that China is mass producing stacks and related equipment the costs will plummet further. Second, renewable energy is bouncing around .01 - .02 cents per kWh (Thanks again, China). 10-20 years ago very few people imagined that it might one day be cost effective to make H2 with renewables. At .01 cents per kWh a Kg of H2 = ~.50 cents. Third, everyone is looking for ways to cut their carbon footprint.

Hydrogen's time has finally come. A Trillion dollar industry is born - and will help humans to explore space as well because H2 is 75% of the universe. That's why Toyota has plans for a hydrogen moon vehicle.
