/u/d3rr - Why is my preferred thumbnail weird and without ".jpg" ?

That's why it didn't show an expando, no file extension.

Right. But I don't understand how it still works in my browser - and more importantly, why I can't find the source image to link to.

Also they don't work here: /s/Writing/comments/3c5n/have_you_gotten_groceries_lately/ for some reason(s).

Well the image can work if you visit it because it responds with a header that says yo this is an image. edit: it is a weird way to set things up, but they are probably trying to prevent this very thing- hotlinking of their precious images.

But for our javascript expando thing, we on purpose just guess if it's a link to an image or not, because we don't want to check ahead of time and spend server resources on it. So no ".jpg", no expando. That's also why the wikipedia expandos fail, we see ".jpg" but it's really a webpage instead, so it fucks up, based on guessing at it.

Figured all that. Thanks though. I thought you might have an insight around the hotlinking/theft defences of their images.

I imaged Wikipedia and Commons (and Wikispooks and Infogalactic, etc - all mediawikis) would be pretty easy to write a work around, but you'd actually need more people using it, and dumb/lazy ones at that who can't bother to link to the actual image rather than image page.

These are all working for me... hmm.. maybe test it in an incognito window/porn tab.

The expandos work, but none worked for the thumbnail.

Which leads me to an idea I had a long time ago and never brought up... Maybe you could make [Thumbnail]nospace(address) an override thumbnail to take priority over all other links, ie. YouTube, articles, images, etc. Also, non-case-sensitive for "thumbnail" - or use whatever key word you like.

Not a bad idea. I think the algorithm now is supposed to take the first usable image that it finds. I'll make a bug about it not finding a thumbnail on your post. It might be giving up and not reading all the way to the end.

Maybe it could even force images without an extension? Or maybe it needs to be certain what file type?

FYI, that's the only time I recall, though there might have been one or few a year ago.
