Was playing a video game with his girlfriend and the cops show up. Maybe they were being loud while playing and it was interpreted by a neighbor as domestic violence?

His girlfriend says he didn't know it was the cops. Even so, showing a weapon can certainly be seen as a threat, whether it's the cops or not. A well trained officer would likely have been able to diffuse the situation. But, perhaps Ryan would have been better to ascertain the situation before opening the door gun in hand counting on intimidation to take care of it.

He would have been better off to shoot first and ask questions later.

Really? You're avocatinig for just shooting at anyone who knocks at the door?

All you have to do is put a sign up saying trespassers will be shot on sight.

Banging on someone's door can be seen as a threat.

Certainly, but opening the door with gun in hand may just invite the threat to act.
