I was told that the SMPTE color bars with a sine tone were called "tones on tails" in England, and that's what they named their band after, before changing it again to Love And Rockets after reading the legendary comic books. Reading the Wikipedia article shows how much we had to base our knowledge on rumour before the Internet. Also, until looking it up just now I thought it was always "tails" plural.
