There are properties of the brain that correlate with a person's sex, and where people can be sex atypical*. It wouldn't surprise me if some of such properties were influenced by, say, testosterone levels during brain development, and that the less-hairy men that make more convincing transvestites, and gay men, are by such measures, on average, more womanly than other men.

That said, it would be interesting to see whether members of "the community" would be willing to accept the negative test results of some of their number, as the price of affirmation for the rest. For the selfish, whether they'd be OK with this would be down to their individual diagnosis.

* for example volume. don't shoot the messenger. it's what you do with it that counts!
