This is horrifyingly dystopian because Google also runs some of the largest DNS registries (the internet phone books that tie a nice text URL.com to an IP address e.g. 10.88.182.101).

They have the ability to essentially refuse to list your site in the DNS, even if you've registered the domain with e.g. GoDaddy, they can filter you out if you're deemed guilty of wrongthink and blacklisted.
