A variation on Powerlifting called Strengthlifting is a sport that recognizes three divisions: Open, Women (and they specify congenital female), and "masters" who are 40 or older. The athletes compete in the Squat, Overhead Press, and Deadlift. It is like powerlifting but swaps the bench press for a strict press from a standing position. The clean and press was removed from the olympics because it was too easy to lean back and turn it into a bench press. The form used in this sport is very strict so they solved the problem that the Olympics didn't.

It is not a very big sport yet, but I hope it grows.

clean and press

Also weightlifters were breaking their backs and becoming paralysed from doing this lift.

I did not know that part of it! Wow, I can see why they'd want to scrap it instead of fix it. The Strength Lifting version is taken off a squat rack standing, and the form required is strict-- no standing bench press. The form is the one taught by, and here is where I end up sounding like a broken record, Mark Rippetoe as (I'm pretty sure) Strength Lifting is sort of his idea.
