Angsty and confused teenager is wielding that identity politics sword. Parent needs to wise up and realize the sham that gender identity is. On a side note, as a teenager, I would have been mortified to declare to my parents that I was polyamorous. What happened to the deep sense of shame people used to instill in their children? Bring it back.

I disagree about the deep sense of shame because I hope my future child tells me things so we can discuss it and I can help steer them in a good direction.

But I do agree that I wish the parent would wise up and realize they're using these labels in search of a personality. I wish this advice columnist had the balls to say this child needs to be steered into actual hobbies and activities that build character. I think that's what a lot of these kids are missing.

Agreed about building character. I see your point about the shame issue, although, I think there is an important balance between keeping things private and being too open/having little shame.

OK, but seriously, this kid is trying on identities like costumes, which is a normal part of adolescence

But a 5 year old KnOwS WhO tHeY ArE!! Seriously, is it a 'phase' or isn't it? Is it an innate, immutable part of their existence, or is it a 'costume'? Make it make sense.

I'm actually surprised that an article like this would be published in a Queertastic website like Slate. Doesn't this make a mockery of queer and trans identities?

I feel sorry for the Mom if this column is real and she's actually expecting useful advice. This kid needs real therapy to deal with their obsession with 'gender and sexuality'. This is clearly consuming their life and reflecting some real psychological issues.

I wish someone could point this poor parent in the direction of gender critical and give her some actual good advice.

The kid spends times on queer wikis...are you sure that's all it is ? Odds that this girl's "glitter family" are spewing bullshit to her all the time ? 2/1 ?
