Originally, when graphics were shittier, he was meant to be androgynous so the player could either think of him as a feminine male or a masculine female, but eventually was settled as a feminine male. https://time.com/4369537/female-link-zelda/

I mean, elves in general have been portayed often as being androgynous. That doesn't mean males are any less male. It's incredibly sexist to suggest that how you look and dress affects who you are as a person in terms of sex, as if being a feminine male or a masculine female is somehow wrong, or that androgyny is something in need of fixing.

You're right, but in Zelda they made sure the Hylians aren't very androgynous.
