I hope some UK users comment on this. I can't compare the two cultures; I've only ever lived in the US and have never even visited the UK.

But this

the US has a pioneer-type, “Don’t Tread On Me” tradition

is absolutely accurate. Liberalism, and in particular "negative liberty" really is foundational to our national ethos. It's why the US is known for its individualism. We also have separation of church and state here, and as u/yousaythosethings phrased it in an earlier comment, the gender identity movement is "a system of belief that demands constant demonstrations of belief and loyalty". And it doesn't just demand these from its adherents but from everyone. So I'd guess that queer theory being both totalitarian and religious is particularly unsettling to Americans.

IDK, but few Americans ever came across as particularly individualistic to me.

As to the difference, I'd say one part is politeness, but another part is the live and let live attitude of a lot of British people. I'd guess they see being trans per se a justifiable spleen, whereas exploiting it is seen as very bad form.
