I did like that they had her in her dress when in her mansion because it was a neat reference to the portrait of her from Soul Calibur 2 and Soul Calibur 3.

I thought it was cool they had her in a dress and they remembered that she does wear a dress like in SCII (well I hope they remembered, it would be disappointing if that was just a decision they made for storytelling reasons), but I wished they put her in a period dress, something that fits the era and her status as an aristocrat (she would look so lovely). I'm not asking for Project Soul to be 100% historically accurate, but at least put Ivy in a nice aristocratic dress that seems to befit the time period.

she wasn't in complete danger considering her sword was a powerful weapon that could do all sorts of tricks to protect herself based on her moveset.

I'm never worried about Ivy, she's too tough to be messed with. When I watched the storyline of SCVI, I imagined the climate of the period and location setting, I imagined feeling cold, but hey, whatever helps her use her weapon and minimise utting her clothing at the same time (my personal joke explanation of why she wears scanty dominatrix outfits).

And yeah Talim's look in SC4 was especially alarming upon further inspection. When I first played the game back when I was a teenager, I didn't notice that Talim's pants were translucent until I went back to the game and took a closer look at the character outfits in that game. Needless to say, I was super shocked that they did that because not only was it inappropriate considering her age, it really did ruin what could've been a cute look for her. Honestly she's always had some very odd looks. I like Talim but it's very unnerving some of the undertones her character leans into.

I don't blame you for not noticing initially, in the gameplay the translucent fabric of her pants are less noticeable. If you look at the official art, you'll notice it right away. Her SCVI default costume is pretty disturbing, she wears a bra that looks more like some straps criss crossed on her chest and her shorts are very open on the sides (I think you can see the sides of her butt cheek in her character trailer). That could've been her best costume, had they not tried to make it so revealing.

(I screenshot this from her character trailer)

When I saw her SCIV outfit, I thought she looked more like a priestess and thought "finally, someone who looks like she fits her title or job", but then when I noticed the translucent pants, I was very disappointed. It was also disappointing that they would sexualise a child (the same could be said for Amy, but she was less severe to me). That could've been her best outfit out of the series, and then they ruined it to make it look more fantasy and eye candy.

Honestly she's always had some very odd looks.

To me, everyone had unique looks to them, (though there were some that had some normal looks like Mitsurugi, Taki, Sophitia, Yun-Seong). If there was anyone that looked the most odd, it was Voldo, I think most of the players would be wondering if he's even human (he is, but he doesn't sound or move like one). Talim had so much potential, and then they wasted her design. To me her SCII first costume would always be the best (I wish they made her tube top larger and cover more of her chest, and made the waist band of her pants reach her waist, not stop at her hips). I would have gone for the SCIII, but the front dark blue part of the costume ruined it (I'm not a fan of her hairstyle, but it's the outfit I'm focusing on). That's the most conservative and decent costume they have for her and they ruined it by making it look like a hybrid two-piece and one-piece outfit. I know they don't suck at fashion design. It's pretty evident in the series, look how they designed SCII Raphael's default outfit, I know they could have done better than that for Talim for SCIII.

Speaking of Raphael, I think they really ruined him in the later games. For me SCII Raphael had the best voice actor and best costume (I personally think all of the SCII voice actors were the best in the series, I just don't feel the next voice actors capture their characters for various reasons). Then for SCIII, they made him a vampire with an overrated one side lock of hair, with the rest gelled back, as if like they were trying to make him look aristocratic and fancy, but the entire thing looks bland and like an attempt at a vampire cliche (that green coat dors not make sense, also it's tacky). Come SCIV, common sense hit them that they should have kept his hair style and make his outfits actually look gothic and they continued this theme for SCV and I appreciated how they didn't ruin his design so much.

For SCVI, I have a feeling they really wanted to take the aristocratic design to eleven, it looked so ridiculous to me. They gave him a off-shoulder cape and a pair of glasses (or mask), thigh high fancy boots with frills and gloves with frills. I feel if they tone back the fanciness, he would look less like someone dressed up to perform Shakespeare and more like an aristocrat, living in the same period as Shakespeare (which he was).

Removing the glasses and changing the boots to leather boots and the gaunlets to simple black ones might work, his shirt and pants can stay the same.

Really though, I always felt that her 2-Player outfit from SC3 because I felt it looked more "Warrior-esq" (relatively) that was both stylish but also somewhat serious.

I think I like her navy captain style more from SCII, even though she does not look good in it, I like the outfit though (I seem to find most of the outfits from that game the most attractive out of the Soul Series). SCIII second outfit gives off the American Wild West feels to me (I think it's the hat). I think the silver parts on her costume add unnecessary bulk to the aesthetics, also I think they should've went with a purple colour palette, it looks a bit too pink. I think it might look better if they put some silver or gold ornate details instead of metal bulk, change the colour of the outfit to a more darker purple palette, make the hat a top hat with a small veil in front with roses pinned to it (maybe) or remove the hat altogether. They were so close and yet so far with this design (why do they keep doing this to me?)

Out of curiosity, who are your favourite characters in the soul series? Who do you main? Which character outfit did you think is the best and which one is the worst?

I agree with you. While I think the way the dress was drawn in the SC3 portrait looked nice, it would be nice if she wore a more historically accurate dress. The game takes place in the late 1500s and I'm sure they could've made a neat Historically accurate dress for her.

I don't blame you for not noticing initially, in the gameplay the translucent fabric of her pants are less noticeable. If you look at the official art, you'll notice it right away. Oh my goodness, I didn't notice that either with her latest look (though i haven't been playing the game much, IRL busy-ness lol). I agree, that could've been her best look but it's ruined by the sexualization. It's just not appropriate for her character. Really I feel like the best look that she's had was in Soul Calibur 3 I wasn't really feeling her 4 pigtail hairstyle but the outfit looked pretty nice I thought. Yeah she has her sides exposed but for the most part, she looks traditional all things considered, at least compared to her other looks. And no translucency going on neither.

It was also disappointing that they would sexualise a child (the same could be said for Amy, but she was less severe to me).

Right, Amy's outfts were really cutting it close too. I'll admit that I'm biased because I like the Gothic Lolita aesthetic and designs like Amy do appeal to me from a fashion standpoint but there's no denying that her Soul Calibur 3 look was jarring. No bra and that dress could slip off with wrong move. Her Soul Calibur 4 look looked a little more fitted in the top and they had the sense to give her bloomer shorts and her Soul Calibur 6 is her best imo. But I think the reason why the character artist did this kinda thing with these characters might have to do with the way age is viewed in the East when it comes to teenagers. I'm not saying it's right but it's the only explanation I can think of.

Talim had so much potential, and then they wasted her design. To me her SCII first costume would always be the best (I wish they made her tube top larger and cover more of her chest, and made the waist band of her pants reach her waist, not stop at her hips). It's funny because i used to not like Talim's SC2 default look when I was younger but it's one of my favorites now. I agree with you that it would've been better if her tube top covered more of her abdomen and the pants were high-waisted but for the most part, it was a neat look for her, I especially liked her hairstyle. Honestly on her SC3 look, if we're talking about the outfit itself excluding her hairstyle, I actually liked it. I do get where you're coming from with the dark blue parts but I just think that the look overall looks cool and the most fitting to her if that makes sense? Had they just kept the garments all white and not include the dark blue, it would be perfect but compared to her other default looks, it's the closest to looking almost "priestess" like. Like if you customize the outfit, I believe you can make the Dark Blue parts White and it looks nice.

But if I had to be honest, my most favorite look of Talim's has to be her extra 3-Player costume from SC2. I know she has her midriff exposed but I just can't help but think she looked really cool there. The hair, the bandanna, the color scheme, and when you chose her "Cao Ankana" weapon with it, she just looked so cool imo lol

Speaking of Raphael, I think they really ruined him in the later games. For me SCII Raphael had the best voice actor and best costume (I personally think all of the SCII voice actors were the best in the series, I just don't feel the next voice actors capture their characters for various reasons). Come SCIV, common sense hit them that they should have kept his hair style and make his outfits actually look gothic and they continued this theme for SCV and I appreciated how they didn't ruin his design so much.

Yeah I agree with you. His SC2 default outfit was his best hands down. The color palette, the garments, everything was so uniform! And his alternate outfits looked good too and really conveyed the type of warrior and country he represented. I'm a bit torn on his SC3 look though tbh. I agree with you on the hair, it looked bad on hm for sure but I honestly did like the outfit itself. I think it's because it makes me think "Castlevania" and I always had a soft spot for the character designs of that series and Raphael's outfit here just hit that mark for me. But yeah his outfits were usually on point and it was for the best when they ditched his vampire shtick though I will admit that I did like his 2-player in SC5 even if it was probably the most tackiest thing he ever wore haha.

Oh and I also agree with you on how you think SC2 had the best voices for the characters. I feel the same way and it's nice to meet more people who feel the same.

Removing the glasses and changing the boots to leather boots and the gaunlets to simple black ones might work, his shirt and pants can stay the same.

Haha I actually liked his thigh high boots, it's the cape that I didn't like but I get what you mean, they could've made the outfit look less OTT and more aristocratic. That's why his SC2 looks were the best, they captured that perfect.

I think I like her navy captain style more from SCII, even though she does not look good in it, I like the outfit though (I seem to find most of the outfits from that game the most attractive out of the Soul Series). SCIII second outfit gives off the American Wild West feels to me (I think it's the hat). They were so close and yet so far with this design (why do they keep doing this to me?)

I also really liked Ivy's Navy Captain style as well, the whole outfit was perfectly coordinated. But yeah it didn't really look good on her and didn't seem like something Ivy would really wear neither. On her SC3 2-Player, I think your criticism is valid. I especially agree that they should've went with a dark purple color theme instead of the reddish pink it had. I did come around to that color but Ivy's main color is Purple and they should've kept that for her. But despite all that, I still can't help but love this outfit for her and I thought it was cool how this was really styled after her SCII 3-Player look.

Out of curiosity, who are your favourite characters in the soul series? Who do you main? Which character outfit did you think is the best and which one is the worst?

Hm that's a tough one to be honest haha. But----

  • Favorite Characters

▶ Seong-Mina ~ I love her personality. Not the biggest fan of her outfits save for her SCIII 2-Player look but her personality is so lovable.

▶ Kilik ~ I relate with the pacifistic nature of his and I find his story sad.

▶ Ivy ~ Strong and courageous who takes no nonsense.

  • Mains

It really depends on the game but consistently, I usually use Taki, Cassandra, Talim, Hwang/Yun-Seong, and Ivy.

  • Best Character Outfit

Again, it's a tough one because I like a lot of outfits from this series but if I could narrow it down to 5

Amy SC6

Zasalamel SC3

Tira SC3 2Player

Zwei SC5 2Player

Hilde SC4 2Player

  • Worst Character Outfit

Ivy SC4 HATE THIS OUTFIT SO MUCH LOL

Hilde SC6 The "boob armor" really kills it for me because Hilde usually always wore normal chest armor and wasn't designed to be overtly sexual. This design choice feels like a slap in the face and I personally don't like it.

Patroklos SC5 Bland and yet over the top looking, I just don't like it at all and his 2-player looked a lot better.

Talim SC4 2-Player What even is this? SO TACKY, arguably her worst look ever imo lol.

Seong-Mina SC2 Like I mentioned, I was never big on her outfits in general but this one felt the most lazy they've done with her. At least her other primary looks tried to make her top look somewhat distinct but this here is just a bikini/bra top.

How about you?
