What the actual fuck. No one thinks about the details of “gender reassignment surgery” because no one wants to thing about the details because it can and often is truly horrifying to believe. I am especially worried about young kids growing up with the idea of thinking these are somehow cosmetic readjustments that are indistinguishable from the real thing and not extreme risky and experimental procedures. When people fail to come to terms with the mental health component of trans identification this is what they’re refusing to grapple with. And by shouting down that discussion, this is what they’re funneling vulnerable kids and adults into. I do believe that adults should be able to do what they want with their bodies if there is a willing doctor and certain standards of care and safeguarding procedures there are being met. I think someone needs to be lucid about what they’re getting into in order to have this performed on them. And that any magical thinking about literally changing sex is a red flag and should be a bar. That is how people get set up for disaster and disappointment and they need to be realistic about what they can reasonably expect as a result of the surgery.
