When you compare the homicide rates of the TIMs in the US who are killed to the homicide rates of American males of their same age, race, socioeconomic background, history of criminality and incarceration etc who are not trans, it becomes clear that TIMs from racial minorities and disadvantaged backgrounds - the ones mostly likely to die of homicide - actually have vastly lower risks of homicide than their non-trans peers.

A young black male from a poor, high crime area in the US is much, much less likely to die of homicide if he's trans than if he's not.

Conclusions (at the top of the paper):

Antiviolence public health programs should identify young and Black or Latina transfeminine women as an especially vulnerable population.

Discussion (further down):

The estimates suggest that overall in the United States during 2010 to 2014, transgender residents may have been at lower risk for homicide than were cisgender residents.

Hah. Funny how they had to extract some kind of politically-palatable takeaway to put at the top... "I don't like your conclusions." ... "Ok, well this subset is more vulnerable even though the whole cohort is not?" ... "Perfect, there's your conclusion. Run it."

Even then the black and latina are only at a slightly higher risk than women, and only because of their involvement in sex work and crime.

I'm tempted to hit Twitter to point this out to the dozy actresses who signed the GLAAD letter.

I think black and Latino TIMs' risk of dying of homicide is equivalent to women's risk overall, but it's very much lower than the risk of black and Hispanic women.

Also, TIMs are men socialized into male behaviors, which means many of them are quick to strike out in violence and anger when they take offense or feel frustrated. Moreover, trans lobby groups say that more than half, perhaps as many as two-thirds, of black TIMs have served time behind bars. One of of 10 black TIMs will serve time in prison or jail in any given calendar year.

Incarceration rates have been disproportionately high among transgender women, with estimates of incarceration history ranging from 37% to 65% in convenience sample studies (Brennan et al., 2012; Clements-Nolle et al., 2001; Garofalo et al., 2006; Reback et al., 2001).

Nearly one in six transgender Americans—and one in two black transgender people—has been to prison.

The rate of incarceration for black transgender women is almost twenty times that of the general population, with one in ten black transgender women having spent time behind bars over the past year.

Trawl through my history here and you'll find the sources of the claims about the murder/homicide rates and risks.
