South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem on Friday suggested language changes in a bill to ban transgender girls and women from participating in girls’ or women’s sports leagues to limit the ban to high school and elementary schools, excluding college sports from the proposal.

    Dated March 19, 2021

Noem also wanted written confirmation of "sex at birth", but South Dakotans can currently change their birth certificates.

Further, from the AP article above,

Sioux Falls Sports Authority, the business organization that hosts NCAA tournaments in the city, warned lawmakers that the ban would jeopardize the city’s chances of hosting future competitions. When the organization bids to host NCAA tournaments, it must complete a questionnaire asking whether any state or local laws are discriminatory. If the proposed bill becomes law, the organization says it would need to disclose that the state has discriminatory laws.

I submit the NCAA has already begun writing off women's sports, as evidenced by this year's treatment of women's basketball tournament:

It's not clear what the next steps the NCAA will take in addressing these issues, if they are planning on addressing things as they currently stand at all, but if there's anything to take away from this, it's that the organization was prepared to let the disparity exist as normalcy until attention was brought to it.

Edit include last quote. Bolding my own.

Since when is it "disrespectful" to have accurate birth certificates and to have to show them for official purposes, like getting a passport, Social Security card or registering a child for school?

    The AP story says:

Seven opponents testified against the bill, saying the move was discriminatory and hurtful to transgender South Dakotans and would move the state backward.

Dylan Daniels, a board member of the Transformation Project – who is transgender and two-spirit, a person who identifies as having both a masculine and a feminine spirit – said he was accustomed to facing harassment, especially when his driver's license didn't reflect his gender marker.

What the hell does the tale of (probably exaggerated or entirely invented) woe told by navel-gazing narcissists like this person have to do with males competing in female sports? Also, the issue here is birth certificates, not drivers' licenses.

To these people, everything in the world has to be a mirror - and a mirror that reflects who they want to be rather than who they actually are. But the fact is, birth certificates and government-issued IDs were never meant to be devices whose purpose is to "validate" anyone's self-image or pretensions.
