But this piece (the full text of which I've posted on this sub previously) was not a NY Times op-ed. It was a review of Janice Raymond's book "The Transsexual Empire" that appeared in the NYTimes Book Review on Sunday, June 6, 1979. The NYT op-ed page is part of the main paper and appears every day and is/was entirely separate from the Book Review, which in the days of print was a separate section printed in tabloid format.

The fact that this piece appeared in the NYT Book Review, at the time the most influential book review publication apart from publications pitched at the professional book industry/trade, shows how mainstream and non-controversial the views in it were at the time.

For those who can't access the piece coz of the NYT paywall, the full text can be found here: https://www.saidit.net/s/GenderCritical/comments/6umc/eyeopening_read_nytimes_rave_review_of_feminist/
