Pleasantly surprised to see Scott Newgent published in a major magazine. Also refreshing to see an adult trans person acknowledging that they transitioned due to internalized homophobia. I'm used to seeing "transition can be great for adults, but just not for kids!" If no one is truly born in the wrong body, transition is never the first best choice for anyone.

This is great. It is a relief to see a major American publication printing something other than TRA propaganda.

But is Newsweek really "a major American publication" nowadays? In 2010, the Washington Post sold it for $1 (one dollar US) plus assumption of its (large) debts, then it was acquired by International Business Times a few years later. In 2018, IBT spun it off as a separate publication - though it's not clear if it's an independent one. IBT itself appears to be linked to a group of right-wing Christian evangelicals with some odd ideas even for right-wing Christian evangelicals, such as the belief that homosexuality is caused by childhood sex abuse.

Exactly who owns Newsweek and what they and the magazine/masthead are all about these days is very murky. But Newsweek today has no connection to the respected magazine it once was (and where I was on the staff in the 1980s and 90s). Amongst journalists as well as amongst media investors, Newsweek today is considered a "zombie" magazine.

I don't think that matters in this instance. Most people will still see it as a neutral source, whereas if that same op-ed was published by Fox News or Feminist Current, many people would reject it as biased outright just based on the publisher.

Yeah, I think most people probably have no idea that Newsweek isn't NEWSWEEK anymore and so will give this op ed the same credibility the old Newsweek would have had.

Thanks for the information on what's happened to Newsweek, MT! I was wondering why it seemed different.

Abigail Shrier contributes articles to Newsweek too.

I'm not sure how I feel about Scott Newgent in general, but this article was excellent and really informative. Well done!

I think this article would be great to send to friends who are wondering what you're on about when you blather on about puberty blockers and Big Gender - so send it! To everyone you know!
