TEXT: Plans to allow people to “self-identify” as a different gender will be formally dropped by the government this week. Ministers have decided against the proposals, which were developed under Theresa May’s government, to allow transgender people to change their birth certificates without a medical diagnosis. Instead, they plan to reduce the cost of making such a change.

At present, those wanting to change must pay £140 and apply to a panel for a gender recognition certificate. They also have to produce two reports that they have suffered from gender dysphoria — usually from their GP and another doctor or psychologist. Applicants also have to show they have lived in their chosen gender for two years and intend to do so for the rest of their lives. The process is seen by trans-rights campaigners as dehumanising, bureaucratic and expensive.

Liz Truss, the equalities minister, will publish the government’s new stance in a response to a consultation on changing the 2004 Gender Recognition Act. The fate of the law has been uncertain since October 2018 amid controversy about the plans. A government source said: “We think that the current legislation, which supports people’s rights to change their sex, is sufficient.” Polls suggest voters are sympathetic to trans rights but do not support transgender women with male anatomy having access to female-only facilities such as prisons and changing rooms.

More than 100,000 responses were received to the consultation. Insiders say 70% backed the idea that anyone should be allowed to self-identify. However, officials believe the results were skewed by responses generated by trans rights groups.

£140 is quite reasonable. And it may put off some of the scam artists. To put it into perspective , suppose you are UK born, have no Irish grandparent but have lived in Ireland for 5 years or longer and would like an Irish passport. No problem , you just have to collect a swathe of documents and pay 1100 euros. Before you buy the passport. Let's hope £140 doesn't turn out to be too reasonable in fact.

Most trans TRA have no interest in getting a GRA. Only a few thousand of them have ever been issued. The TRA just wanted the power trip of self ID. We've seen what they'd do with that in Canada with Yaniv.

Exactly. The bureaucratic issues themselves would out off a lot of people who wanted to play woman, whereas self-ID would have opened the floodgates.

It’s also like adopting a dog. You generally should expect to pay a fee because the shelter wants to know that you’re serious and not someone who is buying a dog for silly reasons or for the purposes of harming the dog.

Hopefully this will discourage some if the casual transvestites from trying to get into women's changing rooms, but who knows :(

Well done, UK women!!!!!

But just reading the GRA - 140 pounds to become a "woman" is still absurd. The 2004 Gender Recognition Act itself is an attack on women's rights.

This is great news! If people are going to waste all their energy on gender, there at least should be gatekeeping to keep out at least some of the creeps.
