To what extent does the German language make the nature of trans activism and the issues being focused on different than in western English-speaking countries where it seems like the battle is very influenced by the nature of the mostly non-gendered English language?

They already have cleverly confused people to the meanings of "Sex" and "Gender". "Geschlecht" (the German word for both) is neutral and can be handily abused to mean any which thing they want.

And our nouns all have a gender.

That is not the problem I am talking about though. Until fairly recently (maybe 2018/2019) transgender was no issue here. The law forbade any sex-changing treatment prior to the 18th birthday, and only after extensive psychiatric treatment (I think it used to be 4 years and then was reduced to 2 years. Treatment was dependent of several clinical therapists recommending it after lengthy therapy.

All this is rapidly changing, and if you know what to look for, you notice how terms are currently obfuscated in a push for US/UK rules and a treatment of teens. There's a heavy influx of autogynephilic and transvestitic males, while the public still believes we talk only about a few rare transsexual males with extreme dysphoria.

I don't know about the laws about sex-change for sure, but Kim Petras is famously known as the youngest person (at that time) to undergo sex-change surgery at age 16. Petras was a subject of a lot of documentaries, esp. Stern TV did a lot of pieces on the boy, who covered his transition from boy to girl. TV channel VOX does a lot of specials about trans people as well, and they are usually full of children and young teenagers on hormone treatment. All dating long before 2018. (I've been on the cool-aid until I peaked, and I followed those programs with fascination.)

So, not to argue against your observation that the train is picking up speed in Germany recently ... but it was unfortunately running for quite a while now. :(

Can you link me to the critical FAZ article? I must have totally missed that, and I'd like to check it out.

LOL, okay, I stand corrected. I don't watch Stern TV, nor VOX or most other Privatfernsehen, so that sensationalist stuff went by me. What I am noticing is how the topic now enters halfway serious broadsheets and magazines, like Spiegel, Zeit, FAZ and Süddeutsche.

As to the article, I believe it was in the FAZ weekend magazine a week ago. The Spiegel referenced it last week.
