This article replacing sex with gender throughout was annoying. Gender is a made-up term. Sex is the real and relevant classification.

Also, women's health has been ignored since time began. Half of the world's population does not have good statistical information on medication dosages, differences in health problem presentation, even reference values. Maybe we should sort that out before focusing on a tiny population.

gender used to just be a synonym for sex. when a vet tech asks me what gender my dog is, it's obvious they are not asking how he identifies. for normal people that's still true, i think. writer is clearly drinking the genderist moron koolaid, though.

gender used to just be a synonym for sex.

Gender has gradually come to be a euphemism for sex in the Anglophone world only over the last 30 years, and the conflation of the two has become widespread & common even more recently than that. In the 60s, 70s and 80s, everyone used sex properly to mean male/female - and the focus of feminists traditionally was on sex, sexism, sex discrimination, sex stereotypes, sex roles, sex quotas, sex crimes, sexual harassment, sex abuse, sex differences, sex parity in pay, etc. All this talk of "gender" - and the use of obfuscating terms like "gender-based violence," "gender equity" and "gender pay gap" - is a new development, and is completely foreign to people who came of age in earlier eras.

The sex in "sex stereotypes" has a different meaning to the sex in "sex crimes". It's not inherently a bad idea to have separate words for the act of sex vs being male or female.

But the sex in each case fundamentally refers to reproduction, the way many species perpetuate themselves. Humans & many other animals and plants reproduce sexually, using sex organs. In all sexually reproducing species, there are two sexes - male & female - & making new life requires the merging of a male & female gamete, which are made by sex organs. Sex discrimination is treating people unfairly due to their reproductive class/category, aka their sex. Sex crimes are crimes that involve sex organs (of either perpetrator or victim, or of both), or have sexual motives - cuz the perp is seeking sexual pleasure. And the reason humans have evolved to have sexual pleasure in the first place is because it provides a motivation to engage in the acts that can & do lead to reproduction & thus continuation of the species... So sex in both cases is all of a piece.

I’ve never had my vet ask me what gender my dog is. One, I’d assume they’d be able to suss that one out on their own pretty quickly. Two, I think that “gender” is entirely conflated with “identity” - hence why it’s replacing “sex” in common parlance, since “sex” is based on facts and nobody likes those - so were my dog’s vet to basically ask me, “Does your dog identify as a boy dog or a girl dog?” I would just gather up my dog in my arms, back out the door slowly, and then break off into a run as soon as I got outside.

That's only because people haven't started transing their dogs yet. Give it a couple of years.

I do know people who proudly declare their dogs as gay or lesbian. I know that homosexuality exists in the animal world, but the only times I’ve seen eager pet owners claim to own a gay pet is when their dog is humping another one, completely oblivious to the fact that that’s something dogs do to establish dominance. And yes, male dogs sniff other male dogs and female dogs sniff other female dogs as a way of getting to know them; that, also, is basic dog behavior and not really to be construed as a key sign of homosexuality in canines. If you point this basic fact out to them, they shush you with “Oh no, my dog is REALLY TRULY gay,” angry that you’ve tried to spoil their fun, because to them, being gay/“queer” is a hip trend that they’re desperate to be a part of, not an actual, lived-with sexual orientation, and if they can’t pull it off, God damn it, their pets will do it for them.

Listen, I'm not sure what point you're trying to make with this non-sequitur. We were talking about people transing their animals and giving them a fictional gender-identity. Then you come out of RIGHT field with "some silly people claim their animals are same-sex attracted". So just clarify, TRANS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LGB. SSA is a real thing, it doesn't need props or medicalization or invented "identities". Please stop being such a homophobe. Homophobia like yours makes gullible and vulnerable people want to opt out of their biological sex.

I...wasn’t. The point I was trying to make is that people will try to claim that their pets are whatever they claim they are in an attempt to appear cool and progressive, so it wouldn’t surprise me if people started claiming their pets are trans. And it fucking pisses me off that you’d accuse me of being homophobic because that’s such virtue-signaling bullshit right there.

I get it. It happens with small livestock too like backyard chickens.

All hens will slow down with their laying within two years. Some can actually grow spurs and start to crow. They're still female but are exhibiting male chicken behavior, so owners have opined that they must be transgender roosters. But its not like they go around claiming pronouns...well not yet.

What next, poultry farmers replacing the age-old term "sexing chicks" to "gendering" them? And the people who do that job will be called "chicken genderers" rather than "chicken sexers"?

Even Wikipedia, which has become full of gender ideology propaganda since being taken over by TRAs who've turned into Wokepedia, still uses "chick sexing" throughout its page on the topic. There's not one word about poultry gender; it's all sex, sex and more sex: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chick_sexing

Exactly. It’s like when straight people decided to co-opt “queer” for themselves, and then justify it because they tell actual LGB people that “queer is self-defined and it really only means whatever it means to you.” Queerness isn’t a hip coffee shop that literally anyone - even utterly straight people - can visit whenever they want to be seen by the masses, and it isn’t a funny, cute label you can apply to animals to make your own life seem more interesting. It’s a real, lived, experienced thing, not just a trendy bit of fun. It’s a slap in the face to actual LGB people.

Yeah, in the culture I was raised, "gender" was used as the "polite term" for sex in reference to identifying someone as female or male.

I had to unfollow one of the best animal behaviorists on tumblr a couple years ago because after getting an ask from a trans person about the evilness of assuming the gender identity of animals they actually agreed and went on a rant about how science and linguistics should start researching dog and goldfish gender identity and come up with better language to talk about it with lmfao. Dead fucking serious. And this was a person highly invested in campaigning against the tautology of anthropomorphizing animal behavior.

YESSSSS! my eyes hurt everytime they were like "this and that depend on age, weight and gender" like WTF, just use the right term ffs!

I'm reminded of those fucking Descovy HIV med commercials where they go through the whole rigmarole about how great it is, and then all of a sudden at the end for .5 seconds they remember to say it "hasn't been tested in individuals assigned female at birth."

I wonder how many women have tried to take this lifesaving medication without realizing what the trans bullshit refers to.

I am also baffled at the way they accidentally stigmatize HIV/AIDS as being particularly trans specific.
