In my lifelong experience, the anti-war movement in the 1960s and the second wave sort of buried the word "skepticism" and replaced it with the deeper, more committed, more action-based concept of "critical thinking/acting." There was always a kind of ivory-tower, male, and overly deliberative sense tied to "skepticism." And many conservative and academic thinkers tended to employ it, so it also had a kind class tinge to it.

Skeptics in the UK is a social / discussion movement that started around the turn of the century. It’s more about debunking things like homeopathy and conspiracy theories.
